Insurgency – ULFA-I militants strike Assam Police camp, injure four
Insurgency – A pre-dawn attack by militants linked to the Paresh Baruah-led faction of the United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I) has left four Assam Police commandos injured in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district. The incident has once again raised concerns over insurgent activity in the region, which had seen relative calm in recent years.

Early Morning Assault in Jagun
The attack took place in Jagun during the early hours of Sunday, catching security personnel off guard. According to initial reports, the militants launched the assault using multiple grenades before opening fire on the police camp. The sudden barrage led to chaos within the premises, prompting an immediate response from the stationed commandos.
Security personnel retaliated, leading to a brief exchange of fire. While the attackers managed to flee the scene, the incident left four commandos injured, three of them critically.
Injured Personnel Under Treatment
Officials confirmed that the injured personnel were quickly evacuated and taken to a nearby medical facility. Three of the injured commandos sustained serious wounds and are currently receiving treatment under close medical supervision.
Authorities have not released the identities of the injured personnel but stated that their condition is being monitored. Senior police officials are in touch with hospital authorities to ensure proper care and timely updates.
Search Operation Launched
Following the attack, security forces initiated a large-scale search operation in and around Jagun. Teams from the Assam Police and other security agencies have been deployed to track down the militants responsible for the assault.
The area has been cordoned off, and combing operations are underway in nearby forested regions, which are often used by insurgent groups as hideouts. Officials indicated that efforts are being intensified to prevent any further incidents and to ensure the safety of local residents.
ULFA-I Claims Responsibility
The ULFA-Independent faction later issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attack. In its communication, the group said that it had previously decided to refrain from targeting police forces after the 2021 Assam Assembly elections.
However, the outfit alleged that security forces had continued operations against its members, resulting in the deaths of several cadres. It cited these actions as the reason behind resuming armed activities against police personnel.
Renewed Concerns Over Security
The incident has sparked fresh concerns about the resurgence of militant activities in Assam, particularly in Upper Assam districts like Tinsukia, which have historically been affected by insurgency.
Security experts note that while militant incidents had declined significantly over the past few years, sporadic attacks such as this highlight the continuing threat posed by armed groups operating in the region.
Local authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Additional security measures are expected to be put in place in sensitive areas to prevent further attacks.
Government Monitoring Situation
State authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have directed security agencies to take all necessary steps to maintain law and order. Officials emphasized that operations against insurgent groups will continue, with a focus on ensuring long-term peace and stability in the region.
The latest attack serves as a reminder that despite progress in curbing insurgency, challenges remain in fully neutralizing militant networks in Assam.
