Inspection Highlights Neglected Housing Units

During the inspection, officials briefed the minister about the condition of nearly 7,400 EWS flats built at the location. The apartments, intended for low-income beneficiaries, were constructed several years ago but were not allotted within the expected timeframe. As a result, many of the buildings now show visible signs of deterioration.

Cracked walls, peeling paint, damaged fittings and neglected common areas were observed during the visit. According to officials present at the site, the lack of occupancy and routine maintenance has contributed significantly to the present condition of the flats. The minister noted that a detailed evaluation would be necessary before any large-scale repair work begins.

Government Plans Technical Assessment and Repairs

Ashish Sood said the purpose of his visit was to understand the extent of structural and infrastructural damage and to explore options for restoration. He added that the government has initiated preliminary technical assessments to determine whether the existing structures can be repaired or require partial reconstruction.

Engineers and technical teams have been asked to prepare reports on the safety, durability and usability of the housing blocks. Based on these findings, a roadmap will be drawn up for renovation and redevelopment. The minister stressed that the process would follow established guidelines to ensure quality and transparency.

Focus on Transparent Allotment Process

Highlighting the importance of accountability, Sood remarked that the EWS flats were built using public funds. He said it was the government’s responsibility to ensure that such housing projects serve their intended purpose and benefit eligible families without delay.

The administration is reviewing the reasons behind the earlier delay in allotment. Officials indicated that once the repair and redevelopment plan is finalized, steps will be taken to ensure a clear and transparent allocation process. Beneficiaries will be selected according to eligibility criteria under existing housing schemes.

Commitment to Dignified Living Conditions

The minister reiterated that improving housing conditions for economically weaker sections remains a priority for the Delhi government. He pointed out that access to secure housing is closely linked to improved health, education and employment opportunities for low-income families.

He added that the government is working on broader urban development measures aimed at upgrading infrastructure in informal settlements and resettlement colonies. The restoration of the Bhalswa flats is expected to form part of these larger efforts to strengthen affordable housing in Delhi.

Next Steps in Redevelopment Plan

At present, the project is at an early stage. Technical surveys are underway, and financial estimates will be prepared after the structural assessments are completed. Officials said timelines for repair work will be announced once the evaluation process concludes.

Residents and housing rights groups have welcomed the inspection, expressing hope that the long-pending flats will soon be made habitable. The government has assured that further updates will be shared after the completion of the technical review.

The visit signals a renewed focus on ensuring that publicly funded housing projects are effectively utilized and that families in need are provided with safe and livable homes.
