Himachal: Widespread Rain and Snow Push Temperatures Sharply Lower
Himachal: Large areas of Himachal Pradesh experienced light to moderate rain and snowfall over the past 24 hours, with intense snowfall reported in a few higher-altitude locations. The spell of unsettled weather brought a sharp fall in temperatures across the state, according to the India Meteorological Department on Wednesday.

Significant Dip in Night Temperatures
Meteorologists at the Shimla weather centre said the system led to a noticeable decline in both minimum and maximum temperatures. In high-altitude regions, night temperatures dropped well below freezing, ranging between minus 6°C and minus 1°C. Mid-hill areas also turned colder, with minimum temperatures recorded from minus 1°C to around 10°C. Kukumseri in Lahaul and Spiti emerged as the coldest location, registering a minimum of minus 6.1°C.
Daytime Temperatures Remain Well Below Normal
Daytime temperatures across the state stayed considerably lower than seasonal averages, falling short by 4°C to 8°C at many locations. High-hill regions reported maximum temperatures between 0°C and 7°C, while mid-hill areas recorded daytime readings ranging from 4°C to 19°C. Bajaura in Kullu district recorded the state’s highest maximum temperature at 19.2°C, offering limited daytime relief amid the overall cold conditions.
Heavy Rainfall Reported Across Several Districts
The weather system brought substantial rainfall to multiple parts of Himachal Pradesh. Bhuntar in Kullu district recorded the highest rainfall at 55.4 mm, followed by Saloni in Chamba with 50.8 mm. Nagrota Suriyan in Kangra received 48.4 mm, while Seobagh in Kullu measured 47 mm. Rainfall totals exceeding 40 mm were also reported from parts of Bilaspur, Mandi, and Solan districts, contributing to wet road conditions and local disruptions.
Substantial Snowfall in Higher Reaches
Higher elevations witnessed heavy snowfall, significantly impacting mountainous regions. Kothi in Kullu district recorded the deepest snow cover at 75 cm, while Koksar in Lahaul and Spiti received 51 cm. Khadrala in Shimla district measured 40.6 cm of snowfall, and Gondla reported 36 cm. Popular hill destinations were also affected, with Manali receiving 28 cm of snow and Kufri recording 11 cm, leading to slippery roads and reduced visibility in some areas.
Thunderstorms and Strong Winds Add to Weather Impact
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning were reported at several locations, including Shimla, Jubberhatti, Sundernagar, Bhuntar, and Kangra. Strong winds further intensified the weather conditions. Kufri experienced gusts reaching up to 94 kmph, while Kalpa’s Recong Peo recorded wind speeds of 72 kmph. Narkanda and Mashobra also reported gusts of around 57 kmph, raising concerns over falling branches and temporary power disruptions.
Cold Day Conditions and Reduced Visibility
Cold day conditions prevailed in Kangra district, while severe cold day conditions were observed in Una, Mandi, and Manali. Shallow fog was reported at Kalpa, reducing visibility during early morning hours. Authorities advised caution for motorists, particularly in fog-prone and snowbound areas.
Western Disturbance Behind Current Weather
The meteorological department attributed the prevailing conditions to an active western disturbance over Jammu and adjoining regions. Officials said another western disturbance is expected to influence northwest India from the night of January 30, which could bring further changes in weather patterns.
Forecast Indicates More Snowfall Ahead
According to the forecast, dry weather is likely on January 29, while isolated places may see light rain or snowfall on January 28, 30, 31, and February 3. More widespread light to moderate rain and snowfall is expected across the state on February 1, with the possibility of heavy snowfall at isolated higher reaches. Minimum temperatures are forecast to fall further by 3°C to 4°C over the next few days, while maximum temperatures may gradually rise by 4°C to 6°C.
Advisory Issued for Residents and Tourists
Weather officials have issued warnings for cold wave conditions and dense fog at isolated locations in low hills and plains. Residents and tourists have been advised to take necessary precautions, especially while travelling through higher elevations and during early morning or late evening hours.
