On Wednesday, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi met Deepak Kumar, a gym trainer from Kotdwar, whose actions during a tense confrontation recently drew national focus. Gandhi later shared a video of their meeting on his social media account, praising Kumar for standing up against what he described as attempts to spread fear and division.
In his message, Gandhi said that while many Indians believe in harmony and compassion, fear often prevents them from speaking out. He noted that Kumar’s courage had offered reassurance to those who value unity. Gandhi added that those who try to intimidate others in the name of hate are ultimately driven by cowardice.
Incident in Kotdwar Sparked Public Attention
The episode unfolded in January in Kotdwar, Uttarakhand. Members of the Bajrang Dal staged a protest outside a clothing shop named ‘Baba School Dress & Matching Centre’ on Patel Marg. The store is owned by 70-year-old Vakil Ahmed. Protesters demanded that the shop’s name be changed, arguing that it was inappropriate.
During the demonstration on January 26, tensions escalated. According to accounts shared by Kumar, he stepped in when the situation turned confrontational. Video footage that later circulated on social media shows him standing between the protesters and the shopkeeper. Identifying himself as “Mohammad Deepak,” Kumar confronted the crowd and urged them to leave.
A few days later, on January 31, a larger group gathered again, this time assembling near both Ahmed’s shop and Kumar’s gym. Roads were reportedly blocked and slogans raised. Police eventually intervened to prevent the situation from worsening. Authorities have since registered three separate FIRs related to the incidents.
Concerns Over Safety and Livelihood
In the viral video shared by Gandhi, Kumar recounted how people gathered outside his residence following the confrontation. He alleged that while police were present, they initially did little to disperse the crowd. Instead, officers escorted him to the police station to prevent further escalation.
Kumar has said that the events have significantly affected his business. The 42-year-old runs a local fitness centre known as ‘The Hulk’ gym in Kotdwar. Since the controversy, he claims that footfall has dropped sharply, leading to financial strain. He described the ongoing tension as damaging not only to his reputation but also to his livelihood.
Gandhi Extends Support to Family
During the meeting, Gandhi also spoke with Kumar’s wife, reassuring her that there was no reason to feel intimidated. According to those present, Gandhi said that individuals who attempt to threaten others are not as powerful as they appear.
Kumar, in turn, told Gandhi that he feared no one except God. Gandhi responded by describing Kumar’s actions as an example of genuine patriotism, saying that protecting fellow citizens and upholding constitutional principles reflects the spirit of the nation.
The meeting took place earlier this week at 10 Janpath, the residence of Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi. Kumar was accompanied by his friend Vijay Rawat and Congress leader Vaibhav Walia. Kumar also met Sonia Gandhi during the visit.
