Governance –  Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a new benchmark in India’s political history, becoming the longest-serving head of an elected government when combining his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister and Prime Minister. The announcement was made by Gujarat BJP president Jagdish Vishwakarma during a press briefing held in Gandhinagar on Thursday.

Record Surpasses Previous Longest Tenure

According to Vishwakarma, Modi has completed 8,931 days in public office, edging past the previous record held by former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, who served for 8,930 days. The BJP leader highlighted that this milestone reflects not just longevity but also sustained public confidence over decades.

He further pointed out that Modi’s time in office significantly exceeds that of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who served for 4,077 days. Additionally, Modi continues to hold the distinction of being Gujarat’s longest-serving chief minister.

A Career Framed Around Public Service

Vishwakarma described Modi’s political journey as one driven by dedication and a service-oriented approach. He said that over the past 24 years, Modi has consistently positioned himself not just as a political leader but as someone committed to serving the nation.

The BJP leader emphasized that the record symbolizes the enduring trust placed in Modi by voters across different phases of his career.

Early Leadership in Gujarat

Reflecting on Modi’s early years in Gujarat, Vishwakarma recalled the challenges the state faced when he assumed office in 2001. The devastating earthquake in Kutch had left widespread damage, raising concerns about the region’s recovery.

He noted that under Modi’s leadership, Gujarat witnessed significant rebuilding efforts and economic progress. Key initiatives such as the Jyotigram scheme, which ensured uninterrupted electricity supply in rural areas, and the Vibrant Gujarat summit, designed to attract domestic and global investment, played a role in reshaping the state’s development trajectory.

Policy Initiatives and Development Focus

During his tenure as chief minister, programmes spanning healthcare, agriculture, and education were introduced, which party leaders describe as contributing to Gujarat’s development model. These initiatives, Vishwakarma said, helped strengthen infrastructure and improve public services across the state.

Key National Schemes as Prime Minister

Since becoming Prime Minister in 2014, Modi has overseen a range of national initiatives aimed at boosting economic growth and welfare delivery. Vishwakarma cited programmes such as Make in India, Startup India, and Stand Up India as efforts to promote entrepreneurship and job creation.

He also referred to welfare schemes including Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Ujjwala Yojana, Ayushman Bharat, and PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, which have targeted economically weaker sections and farmers.

The implementation of the Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-mobile framework was highlighted as a major step in improving the efficiency of Direct Benefit Transfers, ensuring that government support reaches beneficiaries directly.

Infrastructure and Healthcare Expansion

Vishwakarma noted that India has seen accelerated infrastructure growth in recent years, including the expansion of highways, airports, and metro rail networks. In the healthcare sector, he said that 15 new AIIMS institutions have been established, significantly increasing access to advanced medical facilities.

National Security and Global Engagement

On matters of national security, he stated that India has adopted a more assertive approach in response to attacks, referencing actions taken after incidents in Uri and Pulwama.

He also highlighted India’s growing global presence, noting that Modi has received honours from over 29 countries and addressed multiple foreign parliaments. During the COVID-19 pandemic, India undertook a large-scale vaccination campaign and supplied vaccines to several nations.

Cultural Projects and Political Response

Vishwakarma pointed to developments in cultural and religious infrastructure, including projects in cities such as Varanasi and Ujjain, as well as the construction of the Ram temple, describing them as part of a broader approach that combines development with heritage preservation.

He also criticised opposition leaders for personal remarks against Modi, stating that such criticism has been countered by continued electoral support from the public.

A Milestone Beyond Numbers

Concluding his remarks, Vishwakarma said the achievement represents more than just a numerical record. According to him, it reflects a sustained connection between leadership and public trust over an extended period.
