Football – Manchester United Strengthen Top-Four Push With Victory Over Aston Villa
Football – Manchester United moved a step closer to securing a top-four finish in the Premier League after registering a convincing 3–1 victory against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The result keeps Michael Carrick’s side firmly placed in third position in the league standings. Aston Villa, meanwhile, continues to struggle with form and has now suffered three consecutive defeats in the competition, putting pressure on its campaign in the closing stages of the season.
United Take Control in Second Half
After a tightly contested first half, Manchester United found the breakthrough early in the second period. Midfielder Casemiro rose highest in the 53rd minute to head home a precise cross delivered by Bruno Fernandes, giving the hosts the advantage and energizing the home crowd.
The goal shifted the momentum toward United, but Aston Villa responded with determination as they searched for an equalizer.
Villa Briefly Level the Match
Aston Villa managed to bring the game level in the 65th minute when Ross Barkley struck a powerful left-footed shot from inside the box. The opportunity was created by Lucas Digne, whose well-placed assist allowed Barkley to find space and finish clinically.
The equalizer briefly reignited Villa’s hopes of taking something from the match, but Manchester United regained control soon afterward.
Fernandes Leads United’s Response
Just seven minutes after Villa’s equalizer, United restored their lead. Bruno Fernandes once again played a decisive role by setting up Matheus Cunha, who calmly guided the ball past the goalkeeper to make it 2–1.
United maintained pressure during the final stages of the match and sealed the victory nine minutes before full time. Benjamin Sesko finished off another attacking move to ensure all three points remained in Manchester.
Tottenham Secure Late Draw Against Liverpool
In another notable Premier League fixture, Tottenham managed to salvage a 1–1 draw against Liverpool away from home. The result could ease some pressure on Tottenham manager Igor Tudor, whose team had been struggling in recent weeks.
Liverpool initially took the lead in the 18th minute through a free kick from Dominik Szoboszlai. Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was unable to prevent the ball from finding the net, giving the hosts an early advantage.
However, Tottenham showed resilience and found a late equalizer in the 90th minute when Richarlison scored to secure a valuable point.
Relegation Battle Remains Tight
The draw keeps Tottenham only one point above the relegation zone, highlighting how close the battle for survival has become.
Elsewhere, two other matches involving teams near the bottom of the table ended without goals. Nottingham Forest played out a goalless draw at home against Fulham, while Leeds United also shared the points after a 0–0 result away to Crystal Palace.
Leeds faced additional challenges during the match after Gabriel Gudmundsson received two yellow cards and was sent off early in the second half. Despite being reduced to ten players, Leeds managed to hold on for a draw.
The Yorkshire club also had an opportunity to take the lead earlier in the match, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin missed a penalty during the first half.
Arsenal Gain Advantage in Title Race
Results earlier in the weekend appear to have strengthened Arsenal’s position in the Premier League title race.
Mikel Arteta’s team secured a 2–0 victory against Everton. The breakthrough came late in the match when Viktor Gyokeres scored in the 89th minute. In stoppage time, Max Dowman added a second goal.
Dowman’s strike created a historic moment in the competition as he became the youngest player ever to score in the Premier League, achieving the feat at just 16 years and 73 days old.
Manchester City Drop Crucial Points
Manchester City, one of Arsenal’s main competitors for the title, dropped important points after drawing 1–1 away to West Ham.
Bernardo Silva initially gave City the lead with a well-executed chip, but West Ham quickly equalized through a powerful header from Konstantinos Mavropanos. It proved to be the home side’s only shot on target throughout the match.
City created several chances afterward but failed to convert them, leaving the defending champions nine points behind Arsenal in the standings.
Narrow Wins for Newcastle and Brighton
In other matches, Newcastle United secured a narrow 1–0 victory away to Chelsea. Anthony Gordon scored the decisive goal in the 18th minute as Chelsea struggled to convert several chances.
Brighton also claimed a 1–0 win on the road, with Yankuba Minteh scoring the only goal against Sunderland.
Meanwhile, Burnley and Bournemouth played out a goalless draw in a match that offered few scoring opportunities.
