Fishermen – A serious concern over the safety of more than 1,000 fishermen from Tamil Nadu has reached Parliament, as calls grow for immediate government intervention to bring them back safely from Iran and nearby island regions.

Urgent Appeal Raised in Lok Sabha

On Wednesday, Congress MP Vijay Vasanth, representing Kanniyakumari, submitted an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha seeking urgent discussion on the issue. He drew attention to alarming reports suggesting that the stranded fishermen are facing severe shortages of food and are living in a state of fear and uncertainty.

In his appeal, the MP emphasized that the situation has become critical and requires swift and decisive action. He pointed out that these individuals, being Indian citizens, are entitled to protection and assistance, especially under such distressing circumstances.

Reports Highlight Severe Hardships

According to information cited in the notice, many of the fishermen are struggling to access basic necessities, including adequate food and medical care. The lack of resources has reportedly intensified anxiety among them, raising concerns about their immediate survival.

Vasanth described the situation as deeply troubling, urging the central government to prioritize the issue and respond without delay. He stressed that leaving the fishermen in such vulnerable conditions could lead to further complications.

Additionally, he urged authorities to engage in diplomatic efforts to facilitate the safe return of these individuals to India. According to him, coordinated action between different government agencies and international counterparts is essential to resolve the matter effectively.
