EnergySecurity – India and Iran Discuss Maritime Shipping Safety Amid Regional Tensions
EnergySecurity – India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently held discussions with Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi focusing on the safety of maritime shipping routes and India’s energy security interests. The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed on Thursday that the conversation comes at a time when geopolitical tensions in parts of West Asia are raising concerns about shipping routes and the steady flow of energy supplies. According to officials, both sides exchanged views on developments that could affect regional stability and international trade.

Diplomatic Talks Focus on Shipping Safety
During a regular media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that Jaishankar and Araghchi had spoken several times in recent days as part of ongoing diplomatic engagement. The most recent conversation primarily addressed the security of maritime shipping lanes and the implications for India’s energy needs.
Jaiswal noted that while the ministers discussed matters related to shipping safety and energy supplies, it would be premature to provide additional details about the discussions. He emphasized that the talks reflect continued coordination between New Delhi and Tehran during a period of heightened regional sensitivity.
Questions Raised Over Strait of Hormuz Shipments
The spokesperson was responding to media queries regarding reports suggesting that oil shipments destined for India had been allowed to pass through the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz. The waterway is one of the world’s most important energy corridors and plays a key role in global oil transportation.
When asked about claims that two ships had recently passed through the strait carrying shipments linked to India, Jaiswal stated that the ministry did not yet have confirmed information about those reports. He reiterated that officials are closely monitoring developments related to shipping movements in the region.
Support for Indian Nationals in Iran
Alongside diplomatic engagement, the government is also focusing on the safety of Indian citizens currently residing in Iran. The Ministry of External Affairs said that India is helping its nationals who wish to leave the country through nearby land borders with Azerbaijan and Armenia.
According to the ministry, roughly 9,000 Indian citizens were present in Iran at different locations. This group includes students, maritime workers, business professionals, and pilgrims. Officials confirmed that several of them, particularly students, have already left Iran and safely returned to India.
Jaiswal also explained that some Indians living in Tehran, including students and pilgrims, have been moved to safer locations within the country as a precautionary measure. Authorities are continuing to coordinate with individuals who are planning to depart through land routes.
Assistance for Travel Through Neighboring Countries
The government is facilitating travel arrangements for Indians who intend to exit Iran via neighboring countries. Individuals choosing to cross into Azerbaijan or Armenia are being assisted with visa procedures and guidance related to land border crossings.
Once across the border, they can board commercial flights to return to India. The MEA has advised all Indian nationals planning to travel through these routes to carefully follow official advisories issued by the Indian embassy and local authorities.
Officials stressed that these arrangements are meant to ensure that Indian citizens have safe and organized options to leave the country if they choose to do so.
Indian Sailor Killed in Tanker Attack Near Basra
In a separate development, the Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that an Indian crew member died after a crude oil tanker came under attack near Basra in Iraq on Wednesday. The vessel, identified as SafeSea Vishnu, is owned by a United States company.
Following the incident, the remaining 15 Indian crew members aboard the tanker were evacuated and taken to a secure location. The Indian Embassy in Baghdad is maintaining regular communication with Iraqi authorities and the rescued sailors to ensure their safety and provide necessary support.
Earlier, the ministry had also reported that two Indian nationals were killed and another remained missing after merchant vessels operating in the region were targeted in separate attacks.
Authorities said they continue to monitor the situation closely and remain in contact with international partners and local governments to safeguard Indian citizens working in maritime sectors across the region.
