Elections – The political landscape in West Bengal is witnessing heightened activity as major parties gear up for the upcoming two-phase Assembly elections scheduled for April 23 and April 29. However, the process has been overshadowed by concerns surrounding a significant number of voters whose eligibility remains undecided.
Parties Finalise Candidates Ahead of Voting
Political parties have begun finalising their candidates, setting the stage for a competitive contest. The ruling Trinamool Congress has announced its nominees for nearly all constituencies, covering 291 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party has released its candidate list for 144 seats in the first phase, while the Left Front, led by the CPM, has named 192 candidates so far and is expected to complete its list soon. Meanwhile, the Congress is yet to unveil its full slate of candidates.
Large Number of Voters Await Verification
A major concern in this election cycle is the status of nearly 60 lakh voters who have been placed under adjudication. These individuals are currently undergoing document verification as per directions from the Supreme Court. Until the process is completed, their names have not been included in the final electoral rolls, leaving uncertainty about their participation.
Judicial officers have reportedly reviewed around 20 lakh cases, but there is no clear breakdown available regarding how many voters have been approved or removed. This lack of clarity has added to the ongoing debate about transparency in the electoral process.
Decline in Total Voter Count
According to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the total number of eligible voters now stands at approximately 6.44 crore. This marks a noticeable drop from the earlier figure of 7.04 crore published after the Special Intensive Revision conducted on February 28. The reduction is attributed to the removal of over 64 lakh entries identified as deceased individuals, duplicate registrations, or voters who have relocated or could not be traced during verification.
Political Reactions Over Voter Inclusion
The issue has sparked differing reactions among political parties. The Trinamool Congress, along with the Left Front and Congress, has urged the Election Commission of India to ensure that genuine voters are not excluded, even if their cases are still under review. These parties argue that eligible citizens should not be denied their right to vote due to procedural delays.
On the other hand, the BJP has supported the ongoing revision process, maintaining that it is necessary to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the electoral rolls.
Impact Likely Across Key Districts
The scale of the issue is particularly significant in several districts, where a large number of voters fall under adjudication. Regions such as Murshidabad, Malda, North and South 24-Parganas, Nadia, Jalpaiguri, and East Bardhaman are expected to be the most affected. Analysts suggest that nearly 100 constituencies could see an impact due to the uncertainty surrounding voter eligibility.
In Murshidabad, for instance, more than 11 lakh voters out of a total of 54.7 lakh are awaiting clearance. Malda has over 8 lakh such cases, while North 24-Parganas reports nearly 6 lakh voters in a similar situation.
Candidates Also Affected by Pending Status
The controversy has not spared political candidates either. Several individuals contesting the elections have found their own names listed under adjudication. Within the Trinamool Congress, multiple sitting legislators and even a minister have been affected. Despite this, many of them have been renominated for the upcoming polls.
In some constituencies, candidates have raised concerns over inconsistencies in the verification process. For example, in Kumarganj, a significant number of voters remain under review, and reports indicate that even candidates have faced difficulties in getting their documents cleared despite submitting the required paperwork.
Uncertainty Continues Ahead of Poll Dates
As the election dates approach, the issue of voter eligibility remains unresolved. With millions of voters still awaiting verification, questions persist about how the Election Commission will address the situation in time for polling. The outcome of this process could have a considerable impact on voter turnout and, ultimately, the results in several constituencies.
