Elections – The Government Girls High School in Sattani, Udhampur, hosted a dedicated voter registration drive on Sunday, aiming to include newly eligible voters in the Panchayat electoral rolls as preparations gather pace for the upcoming municipal elections.
The initiative, organised by local authorities, focused particularly on encouraging young citizens, especially those from Generation Z, to take part in the democratic process. Officials set up a special camp within the school premises to facilitate easy registration and provide information about voting rights and procedures.
Youth Participation Takes Centre Stage
A noticeable highlight of the drive was the enthusiastic participation of first-time voters. Many young individuals attended the camp to complete their registration, marking an important step in their civic journey.
Anvisha Mahajan, one of the new voters, shared her excitement about casting her vote for the first time. She appreciated the efforts made by the administration to bring the registration process closer to the community. According to her, the initiative not only simplified the process but also created a welcoming environment for young participants. She described voting as a fundamental right and expressed gratitude for the encouragement provided during the event.
To make the experience memorable, organisers greeted new registrants with flowers, symbolising appreciation for their willingness to participate in the electoral process.

Panchayat Secretary Urvashi emphasised the importance of continuous awareness campaigns in strengthening democratic engagement. She explained that the drive was part of a broader effort to ensure that all eligible citizens are included in the electoral rolls.
She noted that officials have been following guidelines issued by the State Election Commission, which stress the need for active outreach. This includes door-to-door campaigns, public rallies, and community engagement programmes designed to inform citizens about the significance of voting.

Preparations for Upcoming Municipal Elections
The voter registration drive comes at a time when preparations for municipal elections in Jammu and Kashmir are gaining momentum. Authorities are currently working on finalising ward reservation lists, taking into account public feedback and objections.
Sources indicate that the elections are likely to be conducted in multiple phases across both the Jammu division and the Kashmir Valley. The entire process is expected to conclude by early November, although an official announcement regarding the schedule is awaited.
Following the municipal elections, Panchayat polls are also expected to be held, further underlining the importance of updating electoral rolls and ensuring maximum voter participation.

In parallel, the Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for Assembly elections in several states and union territories. Polling will take place in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry on April 9, while Tamil Nadu is set to vote on April 23.
West Bengal will undergo a two-phase election, with voting scheduled for April 23 and April 29. Additionally, bye-elections are planned in eight constituencies across Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Nagaland, and Tripura.
