Elections – Tarique Rahman Congratulates Japan’s New Prime Minister After Parliamentary Win
Elections – Bangladesh Nationalist Party Chairman Tarique Rahman has extended his congratulations to Japan’s newly elected Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, following her coalition’s decisive performance in the country’s latest parliamentary elections. His message comes at a time when Bangladesh is preparing for its own national polls scheduled for February 12.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, Rahman praised the outcome of Japan’s lower house election, describing it as a reflection of public confidence in democratic institutions and accountable governance. He noted that credible electoral processes help strengthen political stability and reinforce trust between citizens and the state.
A Democratic Example Ahead of Bangladesh Polls
Drawing comparisons between the two nations, Rahman said Japan’s experience offers an important reminder for countries approaching elections. With Bangladesh heading into a crucial vote, he emphasized that allowing citizens to freely exercise their right to vote remains central to democratic progress.
According to Rahman, elections conducted in a free, fair, and peaceful manner not only determine leadership but also reinforce the legitimacy of governance. He stressed that the strength of a democracy is measured by the integrity of its electoral system and the participation of its people, regardless of political affiliations.
Bangladesh is set to hold general elections on February 12, and political observers have been closely monitoring developments in the lead-up to the polls. Rahman’s remarks appeared aimed at highlighting the broader democratic principles underpinning electoral processes.
Strengthening Japan–Bangladesh Relations
Beyond electoral observations, Rahman expressed hope that Takaichi’s leadership would further enhance ties between Japan and Bangladesh. The two countries share long-standing diplomatic and economic cooperation, particularly in infrastructure development and regional partnerships across Asia.
He said he anticipates continued collaboration under Takaichi’s administration to promote peace, prosperity, and shared democratic values within the region. Japan has been one of Bangladesh’s key development partners for decades, supporting major projects and investment initiatives.
Takaichi Responds to Global Messages
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi also acknowledged congratulatory messages from international leaders following her coalition’s victory. Among them was Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who extended his greetings after the results were confirmed.
In her response on X, Takaichi thanked Modi for his message and reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation with India. She highlighted the importance of advancing the Special Strategic and Global Partnership between the two countries.
Takaichi also underlined the shared vision of promoting a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, often referred to as FOIP, which aims to support stability, rule of law, and economic connectivity across the region. She reiterated her intention to work closely with India to pursue these objectives.
Coalition Secures Strong Mandate in Lower House
According to reports from Kyodo News, Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party secured a commanding position in the 465-member House of Representatives. The party and its coalition partners won 310 seats, giving them a two-thirds majority in the lower house.
This margin allows the coalition to move forward with key legislative initiatives, including the possibility of constitutional revision. Under Japan’s parliamentary system, a two-thirds majority in the lower chamber enables the ruling bloc to override decisions rejected by the upper house, known as the House of Councillors.
Despite the strong showing in the lower house, the ruling coalition does not hold a majority in the upper chamber. Even so, the result marks a significant milestone, as the Liberal Democratic Party becomes the first political party in postwar Japan to secure such a substantial margin in the lower house.
The outcome is being viewed as a decisive endorsement of Takaichi’s leadership and policy direction at a time when regional security and economic cooperation remain central issues in Asia-Pacific politics.
