Elections – Siliguri Mayor Announces Development Agenda and Key Civic Promises
Elections – Siliguri’s mayor and senior Trinamool Congress leader Gautam Deb on Thursday outlined a detailed nine-point development agenda ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. Contesting from the Siliguri constituency in Darjeeling district, Deb stated that the implementation of these proposals would depend on his electoral victory. The announcement places a strong focus on infrastructure, sports facilities, and urban improvement, reflecting the city’s growing needs.

Infrastructure Projects Take Centre Stage
Among the key promises is the construction of an elevated corridor connecting Sevoke Road to Surya Sen Park. The proposed route, which would run parallel to Hill Cart Road, is expected to ease traffic congestion in one of the city’s busiest stretches. Deb also highlighted plans to significantly upgrade the Kanchenjunga Stadium. The vision includes transforming the existing facility into a modern sports complex with international standards, along with the addition of a dedicated cricket stadium.
These projects, according to Deb, are aimed at strengthening Siliguri’s position as a major urban and commercial hub in North Bengal. He emphasised that better infrastructure would not only improve daily commuting but also attract investments and boost tourism.
ED Issues Fresh Summons to TMC Ministers
In a separate development, the Enforcement Directorate has once again summoned two state ministers, Sujit Bose and Rathin Ghosh, in connection with an alleged municipal recruitment scam. The notices were issued just days before the Assembly elections, adding a political dimension to the ongoing investigation.
Sources within the agency indicated that this is the third time both leaders have been asked to appear for questioning at the CGO Complex in Salt Lake. Officials suggested that failure to comply with the summons could lead to legal action. The investigation is focused on alleged irregularities in municipal service appointments.
Both Bose and Ghosh are contesting from the Bidhannagar and Madhyam constituencies respectively. The ruling party has not yet issued a detailed response to the latest summons, but the matter is expected to remain a key talking point during the election campaign.
Jadavpur University Tightens Event Regulations
Meanwhile, Jadavpur University has introduced stricter guidelines to regulate campus events, particularly concerning noise levels. The new directive requires any student group or department planning an event to submit a formal undertaking confirming adherence to prescribed noise regulations.
According to a recent circular, organisers must provide details of the sound system being used, including information about the vendor. The equipment must include noise-limiting devices to ensure compliance with established standards. This step is aimed at maintaining a balance between campus activities and the surrounding environment.
Measures to Ensure Order and Safety
The university has also mandated that event organisers prevent any form of disorderly gathering or incidents during programmes. A 10-point undertaking must be submitted to a designated panel, which will review the proposal before granting permission.
Officials said the move is intended to streamline event management on campus while ensuring safety and discipline. The guidelines come amid concerns over increasing complaints related to noise and crowd management during student-led activities.
Together, these developments reflect a mix of political, administrative, and institutional actions shaping the current landscape in West Bengal. While election promises focus on long-term urban growth, ongoing investigations and regulatory measures continue to influence public discourse in the state.
