Elections – Nagaland Leads Early as Voter Turnout Rises in Bypolls

Elections –  The initial hours of polling in several Assembly by-elections across India have shown encouraging participation, with Nagaland taking an early lead in voter turnout, followed by Tripura and Karnataka.

Nagaland bypoll turnout leads

Nagaland Records Highest Early Voting Percentage

As per data released by the Election Commission at 9:00 am on Thursday, the Koridang constituency in Nagaland reported the strongest turnout among all seats, reaching 19.80 percent. This early surge indicates active voter engagement in the region, particularly in a constituency where political stakes are considered significant.

Tripura Follows with Steady Participation

In Tripura, the Dharmanagar seat registered a turnout of 15.63 percent during the same period, placing it second in the early trend list. The constituency is witnessing a competitive contest, which appears to be drawing voters to polling stations from the beginning of the day.

Moderate Turnout Observed in Karnataka

Karnataka’s constituencies have so far recorded relatively lower participation compared to Nagaland and Tripura. Bagalkot reported an 11.87 percent turnout, while Davanagere South lagged slightly behind at 9.01 percent. Voting in both seats began at 7:00 am along with other constituencies across states.

Key Political Contests in Karnataka

The by-elections in Karnataka are marked by notable political line-ups. The Congress party has nominated Umesh Meti from Bagalkot and Samarth Mallikarjun from Davanagere South. Both candidates come from established political families, with Umesh Meti being the son of former legislator HY Meti and Samarth Mallikarjun the son of a sitting state minister.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded Veerabhadrayya Charantimath in Bagalkot and Srinivas T Dasakariyappa in Davanagere South. These contests have drawn attention due to their local political significance and the legacy factor involved.

Both constituencies became vacant following the deaths of their respective sitting members, prompting the need for by-elections.

Contest Intensifies in Nagaland’s Koridang Seat

In Nagaland, the Koridang seat has also seen a closely watched contest. Congress candidate T Chalukumba AO is competing against Daochier I Imchen, the son of veteran BJP leader Imkong L Imchen. The seat fell vacant after the passing of Imkong L Imchen, making this election politically sensitive.

Interestingly, there was a withdrawal of candidature by a BJP state council member in favor of Imchen, consolidating support within the party.

Multi-Cornered Fight in Tripura

The Dharmanagar constituency in Tripura is witnessing a three-way contest. The BJP has fielded Jahar Chakraborti, while Congress candidate Chayan Bhattacharjee and CPI(M)’s Amitabha Datta are also in the race. The seat became vacant after the death of Biswa Bandhu Sen, who had served multiple terms and was the Speaker of the state assembly.

Goa Bypoll Cancelled by Court

While polling was scheduled in Goa’s Ponda constituency as well, the Bombay High Court cancelled the by-election, leading to its exclusion from Thursday’s voting process.

Upcoming Polling and Result Schedule

The Election Commission had earlier outlined a broader by-election schedule covering eight Assembly seats across six states. Additional polling will take place on April 23 in constituencies such as Umreth in Gujarat and Rahuri and Baramati in Maharashtra.

Vote counting for all these by-elections is scheduled for May 4, when final results will determine the political outcomes across these regions.
