Elections – Key Talks in Chennai Aim to Seal NDA Seat Deal
Elections – Union Minister Piyush Goyal is scheduled to land in Chennai on Monday to lead a decisive round of negotiations aimed at finalising seat-sharing arrangements within the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

Breakthrough in Delhi Sets the Stage
The visit comes soon after an important development in New Delhi, where AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami met Union Home Minister Amit Shah. According to sources familiar with the discussions, the meeting helped clear several sticking points that had slowed progress in alliance talks over recent weeks.
With major disagreements largely resolved, alliance leaders now appear closer than ever to sealing a formal agreement. The groundwork laid in Delhi has paved the way for Monday’s consultations to focus on final adjustments rather than broad negotiations.
Focus Shifts to Final Adjustments
Sources within the alliance indicate that most of the seat-sharing framework has already been agreed upon informally. The remaining discussions are expected to centre on a few sensitive constituencies where more than one party has shown interest.
Leaders are aiming to strike a balance that keeps all partners satisfied while also ensuring that the alliance presents a united and competitive front in the elections. The emphasis remains on coordination and avoiding internal friction during the campaign.
Meetings With Key Allies Planned
State BJP president Nainar Nagenthran confirmed that Piyush Goyal will engage with major alliance partners, including the AIADMK, PMK, and AMMK, during his brief visit. The meetings are expected to be completed within the same day, reflecting the urgency to finalise the arrangement as the election timeline approaches.
Party insiders suggest that the leadership is keen to announce the seat-sharing formula soon to allow candidates enough time to prepare for campaigning.
Likely Distribution of Seats
Preliminary indications suggest that the BJP could contest approximately 28 to 29 constituencies. The PMK is expected to receive between 16 and 18 seats, while the AMMK may be allocated around 10 constituencies. Smaller alliance partners are likely to be accommodated with one to three seats each, depending on their influence in specific regions.
Most of the intense negotiations over seat allocation have already taken place, leaving only a limited number of constituencies open for final discussion.
Strategic Importance of Key Regions
Several urban and semi-urban constituencies have drawn particular attention during the talks. In Chennai, discussions have reportedly focused on areas such as T Nagar, Velachery, and Mylapore, where electoral prospects are considered significant.
In Coimbatore, the BJP is expected to secure an additional seat compared to previous elections, reflecting its growing presence in the region. Meanwhile, in Kanyakumari district, the alliance is likely to retain an important constituency as part of its broader electoral strategy.
Final Agreement Expected Soon
With most differences already narrowed, Monday’s discussions are widely seen as the final step before a formal announcement of the NDA’s seat-sharing agreement in Tamil Nadu. Leaders across the alliance are hopeful that the outcome will strengthen coordination and boost their chances in the upcoming Assembly elections.
A clear and unified strategy is expected to play a crucial role as parties prepare to enter the campaign phase in the coming weeks.
