Elections – India Poll Body Reassigns Senior Police Officers Ahead of Voting
Elections – The Election Commission of India has initiated a fresh round of administrative changes in Tamil Nadu, transferring four Indian Police Service officers as part of its preparations for the upcoming state elections. The move comes after a review of the state’s readiness for polling, with officials directed to assume their new roles immediately.

Key Transfers Announced in Tamil Nadu
According to an official communication, G Jawahar, a 2016-batch IPS officer, has been appointed Superintendent of Police in Kancheepuram. K Prabakar will take charge as SP of Perambalur, while E Sundaravathanam, also from the 2016 batch, has been posted as SP of Thanjavur. Meanwhile, GSA Myilvaganan has been assigned the role of SP in Tenkasi.
The Commission has instructed that all transfers be implemented without delay, setting a deadline of 11:00 AM on Saturday for the officers to report to their new postings. It also clarified that these officers will not be involved in any election-related duties during the polling process.
Poll Schedule and Political Context
Tamil Nadu is set to vote in a single phase on April 23, with counting scheduled for May 4. The tenure of the current 234-member legislative assembly is due to end on May 10, making the election a crucial political event in the state.
The contest is expected to be closely fought between the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, which includes Congress and several regional parties, and the National Democratic Alliance led by AIADMK, supported by BJP and PMK. Both alliances have been actively campaigning as the election date approaches.
Similar Administrative Changes in West Bengal
The Election Commission has taken comparable steps in West Bengal as well, where elections will be conducted in two phases on April 23 and April 29. In a recent notification, several officers were reassigned to key districts to ensure efficient election management.
Among the appointments, Surya Pratap Yadav has been posted as Superintendent of Police in Barasat Police District, while Rakesh Singh will serve as SP of Cooch Behar. Kumar Sunny Raj has been assigned to Birbhum, and Ishani Paul will oversee Islampur Police District.
Other notable postings include Pushpa as SP of Hooghly Rural and Jaspreet Singh as SP of Diamond Harbour Police District. Additionally, Yeilwad Shrikant Jagannathrao has been appointed Deputy Commissioner of the Central Division in Kolkata, while Papiya Sultana will take charge as SP of Paschim Medinipur.
Focus on Smooth Election Conduct
These transfers are part of a broader effort by the Election Commission to maintain neutrality and ensure that law enforcement operates independently during the electoral process. By repositioning key officials, the Commission aims to strengthen administrative efficiency and uphold the integrity of the elections.
Such measures are routinely undertaken ahead of major elections in India to prevent any potential conflicts of interest and to ensure a level playing field for all political parties.
With both Tamil Nadu and West Bengal heading into significant electoral contests, the Commission’s proactive steps highlight its focus on transparent and orderly poll management.
