Elections – Assam Witnesses Massive Voter Turnout in Single-Phase Polling
Elections – Polling across Assam’s 126 assembly constituencies commenced on Thursday morning, marking a crucial day in the state’s political calendar. Voters began arriving at polling stations early, forming long queues to exercise their democratic rights in what is being described as a significant electoral contest.

Call for Strong Voter Participation
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma appealed to citizens to participate actively in the voting process. He stressed that every vote plays an essential role in shaping the future of the state. In a message shared publicly, he described the election as a “festival of democracy” and encouraged people to turn out in large numbers to strengthen democratic values and contribute to Assam’s progress.
Voting Begins Smoothly Across Regions
Polling started at 7 am under tight security and administrative arrangements designed to ensure a free and fair election. Authorities reported that the process began smoothly across both urban and rural constituencies. Election officials worked to manage crowds efficiently while maintaining order at polling booths.
This electoral exercise is part of a broader voting schedule that also includes elections in Kerala and the Union Territory of Puducherry. However, Assam is conducting its election in a single phase, making the day particularly significant for the state.
Large Electorate and Diverse Participation
Assam has a sizable voter base, with more than 2.5 crore eligible voters registered to cast their ballots. The electorate includes over 1.25 crore male voters and nearly the same number of female voters. Additionally, a small number of voters from the transgender community and thousands of service voters are also participating.
Young voters have a noticeable presence, with more than six lakh individuals aged between 18 and 19 eligible to vote for the first time. At the same time, over two lakh voters are above 80 years of age, reflecting a wide age range among participants. Persons with disabilities are also part of the electorate, with arrangements made to ensure accessibility.
Extensive Arrangements for Transparent Polling
The Election Commission has implemented several measures to maintain transparency and efficiency. Webcasting facilities have been set up at all polling stations to monitor the process in real time. This includes more than 31,000 main polling stations along with a few auxiliary ones.
To handle the logistics of such a large-scale election, over 1.5 lakh polling personnel have been deployed. Electronic voting machines, including ballot units, control units, and VVPAT devices, have been distributed across constituencies, with additional units kept in reserve to address any technical issues.
Political Contest Intensifies
The election is expected to be closely contested, with 722 candidates in the fray. The ruling alliance, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, is aiming to secure a third consecutive term in power. Meanwhile, the Congress has formed a coalition with five other parties in an effort to challenge the incumbent government.
Both alliances have campaigned extensively in the lead-up to the vote, focusing on development, governance, and regional concerns. The outcome will play a key role in determining the political direction of Assam in the coming years.
Voters Shape the State’s Future
As polling continues throughout the day, the emphasis remains on peaceful participation and high voter turnout. Election authorities and political leaders alike have highlighted the importance of each vote in strengthening democratic institutions.
With a large and diverse electorate taking part, the election represents a significant moment for Assam, reflecting both civic engagement and the competitive nature of its political landscape.
