Advance Assistance for Women Beneficiaries

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday confirmed that ₹5,000 has been credited to the bank accounts of 1.31 crore women enrolled under the Kalaignar Women’s Rights Scheme. The amount includes ₹3,000 released in advance for the months of February, March and April, along with an additional ₹2,000 described as a summer support package.

In a statement shared on social media, Stalin said the early release was intended to ensure uninterrupted financial assistance. He alleged that attempts were being made to stall the disbursement due to the approaching elections, but maintained that the state government moved swiftly to prevent any disruption to beneficiaries.

The Kalaignar Women’s Rights Scheme currently provides eligible women with ₹1,000 per month. Stalin further stated that if his party returns to power, the monthly assistance would be increased to ₹2,000 under what he referred to as a renewed governance framework.

AIADMK Unveils Welfare-Focused Poll Promises

The principal opposition party, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, has also rolled out a set of election assurances centred on social welfare and financial relief.

Among its key proposals is an increase in social security pensions from ₹1,200 to ₹2,000. The enhanced pension would cover senior citizens, widows, unmarried elderly women, women abandoned by their spouses, persons with disabilities, and transgender individuals.

The party has also pledged to waive education loans taken from banks, aiming to reduce the financial burden on students and their families. Additional promises include distributing three free LPG cylinders annually to rice ration card holders and extending structured support to the traditional sport of Jallikattu, including compensation in cases of injury or death during events.

Interest-free loans for women from minority communities to support self-employment ventures are also part of the party’s commitments.

Earlier, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami outlined the first phase of the party’s election platform. This included the Women’s Welfare Kulavilakku Scheme, offering ₹2,000 per month to ration card-holding families, with funds to be transferred to the woman head of the household.

Other announcements featured a proposal for free bus travel for men in city services while retaining the existing scheme for women, expanded housing support under the Amma Illam Scheme, enhancement of the employment guarantee programme to 150 days, and distribution of two-wheelers to five lakh women beneficiaries.

Tight Security for TVK Election Meeting

Amid the heightened political activity, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam is scheduled to hold an election meeting in Salem on Friday. The event will take place at Seelanayakkanpatti, where party chief Vijay is expected to address 4,998 attendees at the KVP Garden venue.

Authorities have imposed strict entry controls for the gathering. Only individuals carrying QR code-enabled passes will be permitted inside the venue. Police presence has been significantly increased, with vehicle inspections and traffic diversions implemented in and around the area.

Officials have advised members of the public without authorised passes to follow the proceedings through live broadcasts instead of attempting to access the venue.

The enhanced security measures follow a tragic stampede at a previous TVK event in September that resulted in 41 fatalities. Since then, law enforcement agencies have tightened crowd management protocols for large political meetings across the state.

Electoral Landscape

The 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly is expected to go to polls in the first half of the year. In the 2021 Assembly elections, the ruling party secured 133 seats, while its alliance partners and opposition parties shared the remaining constituencies. The forthcoming election is likely to witness intense competition as parties highlight welfare schemes and financial assistance initiatives as key components of their campaign strategies.
