Election – Puducherry Votes in Key Assembly Poll Amid Tight Contest
Election – Voting for the Puducherry Assembly elections began on Thursday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling on citizens to take part in large numbers. In a message shared on social media, he encouraged people across the Union Territory to actively participate in the democratic process, highlighting the importance of each vote in shaping Puducherry’s future. He also made a special appeal to young voters and women to come forward and exercise their rights.

Voting Across All Constituencies
Polling is underway in all 30 Assembly constituencies, where approximately 9.5 lakh registered voters are eligible to cast their ballots. A total of 294 candidates are in the fray, making this election a closely watched and competitive contest. Several constituencies are expected to witness narrow margins, increasing the significance of voter turnout and individual preferences in determining the final results.
Statehood Debate Takes Centre Stage
One of the most prominent issues in this election is the long-standing demand for full statehood. The ruling alliance, led by Chief Minister N Rangasamy and supported by the AINRC–BJP combine, has argued that maintaining close coordination with the central government helps in ensuring efficient governance and quicker implementation of development initiatives.
On the other hand, the Congress–DMK alliance has positioned the election as a critical moment for greater administrative independence. The alliance has pointed to ongoing differences with the Lieutenant Governor, raising concerns about limitations on the powers of the elected government and emphasizing the need for enhanced autonomy.
Economic Concerns Influence Campaign
Economic matters have also played a key role during the campaign period. The proposal to privatise the electricity department has sparked protests among residents, with concerns about potential increases in tariffs. This issue has become a major point of debate between the ruling alliance and the opposition.
While the NDA has focused on highlighting welfare measures such as subsidies and direct financial assistance, opposition parties have brought attention to challenges like unemployment, rising living costs, and the migration of young people to cities such as Chennai and Bengaluru in search of better job opportunities.
New Political Entrants Add Uncertainty
The presence of new political players has added an element of unpredictability to the election. Actor-turned-politician Vijay has entered the political arena with his party, which is expected to influence vote shares in multiple constituencies. Additionally, independent candidates and smaller parties are also contesting, further dividing the vote and increasing the chances of closely contested outcomes.
Political observers believe that this fragmented landscape could lead to unexpected results, including the possibility of a hung Assembly if no single alliance secures a clear majority.
High Stakes for Puducherry’s Future
With key issues such as governance, economic stability, and statehood dominating the discourse, the election is seen as a significant moment for Puducherry. Voters are expected to play a decisive role in determining the direction of the Union Territory’s political and administrative future.
The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, when the final outcome of this closely fought election will be revealed.
