Election – Kolkata Unveils Election Tram Ahead of 2026 Polls
Election – The run-up to the West Bengal Assembly elections has begun with renewed focus on voter engagement and law enforcement preparedness.

The West Bengal election machinery has stepped up its outreach efforts ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls, with a unique initiative launched in Kolkata on Friday. State Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal flagged off a specially designed “Election Tram,” adorned with posters and messages encouraging citizens to participate in the democratic process. The tram is expected to travel through key parts of the city, serving as a moving platform for voter awareness.
Poll Schedule Announced for Two Phases
The upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal will be conducted in two stages. According to officials, voting is scheduled for April 23 and April 29, while the counting of votes for both phases will take place on May 4. Authorities are focusing on ensuring smooth polling operations across all constituencies, with special emphasis on security and voter turnout.
Cartoon Character Campaign to Engage Voters
In an effort to reach a wider audience, especially younger voters and families, the Election Commission has collaborated with the popular animated character Chhota Bheem. The campaign aims to simplify electoral messaging and make voter education more accessible and engaging. Officials believe that using familiar characters can help spread awareness about the importance of voting in a relatable manner.
Report Submitted on Basanti Violence
Meanwhile, concerns over election-related violence have also surfaced. CEO Manoj Kumar Agarwal confirmed that a detailed report has been received from the District Officer regarding the recent unrest in the Basanti area of South 24 Parganas district. He stated that law enforcement agencies have registered a case involving assault and other relevant charges, and an investigation is currently underway.
Incident During Political Campaign
The violence reportedly occurred during a campaign event of a BJP candidate near Basanti Bazaar. The situation escalated, leading to clashes that left several individuals injured, including police personnel. The incident has raised questions about security arrangements during politically sensitive events in the region.
Police Official Suspended Over Lapses
In response to the incident, the Election Commission of India took disciplinary action against Inspector Avijit Paul, who was in charge of the Basanti Police Station. He has been suspended with immediate effect following findings of negligence in handling the situation.
Election Commission Flags Security Failures
According to the Commission’s order, the officer failed to make adequate security arrangements despite prior knowledge of political gatherings involving multiple parties. It was also noted that Central Armed Police Forces had been available in the area, but were not requisitioned for maintaining law and order. The Commission described this as a serious lapse in duty and emphasized the need for stricter vigilance during the election period.
Focus on Safe and Fair Elections
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to conducting free, fair, and peaceful elections across the state. With heightened monitoring and stricter enforcement measures, officials aim to prevent further incidents and ensure that voters can exercise their rights without fear or disruption.
