Seat-Sharing Talks Near Final Stage

Speaking to reporters in Delhi during his second visit to the national capital this month, Palaniswami expressed confidence that the alliance partners are working in coordination. He noted that discussions regarding constituency allocation are progressing positively and are expected to conclude soon.

According to him, a formal announcement detailing how seats will be distributed among NDA allies in Tamil Nadu is likely to be made within the next few days. His remarks come at a crucial juncture, with the state heading toward a single-phase election scheduled for April 23.

No Alliance with Vijay’s Party

Palaniswami also addressed speculation surrounding a possible tie-up with actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). He categorically dismissed any such possibility, stating that there have been no discussions between the AIADMK and TVK regarding an alliance.

This clarification follows recent political statements from Vijay, who has made it clear that his party intends to chart its own path in the elections.

Vijay Signals Independent Political Stand

Earlier this week, Vijay, while addressing supporters at an Iftar gathering in Mamallapuram, emphasized that his party would remain committed to its principles of secularism and social justice. He rejected rumors about potential alliances and indicated that TVK plans to contest the elections independently.

He also expressed confidence in his party’s ability to achieve its political goals without aligning with established coalitions, underlining a strategy focused on building a distinct political identity.

A Competitive Multi-Front Election

The Tamil Nadu Assembly elections are shaping up to be a closely watched multi-cornered contest. The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is leading the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), which includes the Congress and other regional partners.

On the other side, the AIADMK is spearheading the NDA in the state, with support from parties such as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK).

In addition to these alliances, Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) has announced that it will contest all 234 constituencies independently, adding another dimension to the electoral battle.

Election Timeline and Past Results

The Election Commission of India has confirmed that voting in Tamil Nadu will take place in a single phase on April 23. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, just days before the current assembly’s term concludes on May 10.

Looking back at the 2021 Assembly elections, the DMK secured a decisive victory with 133 seats, forming the government. The AIADMK won 66 seats, while the Congress managed to secure 18 seats as part of the alliance. The election saw a voter turnout of 76.6 percent, reflecting strong public participation.

With alliances taking shape and new political entrants entering the fray, the 2026 Tamil Nadu elections are expected to be a significant test for both established parties and emerging forces.
