EkviraYatra – The annual pilgrimage dedicated to Ekvira Devi in Lonavala is set to take place over three days from March 24 to March 26, drawing thousands of devotees, particularly from the Agri-Koli community for whom the deity holds deep cultural and spiritual significance. In view of the expected surge in visitors, authorities have approved a temporary toll exemption on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway during the yatra period.

Toll Exemption Linked to Official Authorization

The toll waiver, however, will not be automatically applicable to all vehicles. Devotees must carry a special authorization letter issued by Bhiwandi Member of Parliament Suresh Mhatre, popularly known as Balya Mama. According to the MP, only those presenting this officially sanctioned document at toll plazas will be allowed to pass without paying the fee.

Officials managing toll operations on the expressway have agreed to implement this arrangement for the duration of the pilgrimage. The decision follows a formal request made by Mhatre, who highlighted the challenges faced by devotees traveling long distances to participate in the religious event.

Large Footfall Expected During Three-Day Event

The Ekvira Devi temple, located near Lonavala, attracts visitors from across Maharashtra every year. Devotees from regions such as Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and surrounding suburban areas are expected to travel in significant numbers this year as well. With thousands likely to converge on the temple over the three days, authorities anticipate heavy vehicular movement on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, one of the busiest highways in the country.

One of the key reasons behind requesting the toll waiver was to ease the financial burden on pilgrims. Many devotees, especially those traveling in groups or making repeated trips, often find toll charges expensive. In previous years, there have also been reports of disagreements and delays at toll booths during peak pilgrimage days.

By allowing toll-free access for vehicles carrying the authorization letter, officials aim to streamline traffic flow and reduce congestion caused by disputes or payment-related delays.

Alongside the toll relief announcement, MP Suresh Mhatre has urged all devotees to strictly follow traffic rules while traveling. He emphasized the importance of road safety, especially given the anticipated increase in traffic volume during the yatra.

Authorities have also indicated that additional monitoring and traffic management measures may be put in place to ensure smooth movement along the expressway and surrounding routes leading to the temple.
