Education – The University of Kashmir will host its 21st convocation ceremony on Thursday, where Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan will attend as the chief guest. –

Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan is set to preside over a significant academic gathering in Srinagar as the University of Kashmir prepares to award degrees to thousands of students at its main campus in Hazratbal.
Civic Reception and Cultural Evening in Srinagar
Ahead of the convocation, a civic reception was organised in honour of the Vice President at Lok Bhawan in Srinagar on Wednesday evening. The programme featured a cultural showcase highlighting the traditional folk dances and music of Jammu and Kashmir, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich heritage.
The visit marks Radhakrishnan’s first trip to the Union Territory since assuming office as Vice President.
Dignitaries to Attend the Ceremony
The convocation ceremony will be presided over by Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha in his capacity as Chancellor of the University. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who serves as the Pro-Chancellor, will attend as the guest of honour.
Among those expected to be present are Higher Education Minister Sakina Itoo, Vice Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan, senior officials from the civil and police administration, deans and heads of various departments, faculty members, and graduating scholars who are scheduled to receive their degrees.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan stated that the presence of the Vice President underscores the national recognition the institution has earned for its academic standards and research initiatives.
Over 59,000 Degrees to Be Conferred
During the ceremony, the University will confer a total of 59,558 degrees. This includes 44,910 undergraduate degrees, 13,545 postgraduate qualifications, and 620 doctoral degrees awarded to PhD scholars.
The large number of graduates reflects the University’s expanding academic footprint and its contribution to higher education in the region.
Established as the oldest university in Jammu and Kashmir, the University of Kashmir holds a NAAC A++ accreditation. It is currently ranked 34th in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and is counted among the top eight State Public Universities in India.
Multi-Layered Security Arrangements in Place
Authorities have implemented comprehensive security measures across Srinagar in view of the high-profile visit. Security personnel have been deployed along key routes, and vehicle checks are being conducted at multiple entry points into the city. Occupants of vehicles are being frisked as part of the standard protocol.
Dry runs have been carried out along the route designated for the Vice President’s convoy to ensure smooth movement. Temporary checkpoints and drop gates have been set up at several locations to maintain security during the event.
Traffic Advisory Issued for Public Convenience
The traffic department has released a detailed advisory outlining restrictions and diversions for Thursday. According to officials, the measures are designed to safeguard the movement of dignitaries while minimising inconvenience to residents.
Traffic restrictions will remain in effect from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. However, medical emergencies have been exempted from these curbs to ensure uninterrupted access to healthcare facilities.
With administrative preparations completed and security protocols activated, the University of Kashmir is ready to host one of its most significant academic events, drawing participation from top constitutional authorities and celebrating the achievements of thousands of students.
