Education – NCERT Introduces New Class 9 Hindi Textbook ‘Ganga’ for 2026 Session
Education – The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has taken a major step in reshaping secondary education by releasing a new Hindi textbook for Class 9, titled ‘Ganga’, which will be introduced from the 2026–27 academic year.

The newly launched textbook is part of the broader implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and reflects the vision of integrating language learning with cultural understanding. The name ‘Ganga’ has been carefully chosen to represent continuity, diversity, and the deep-rooted cultural significance of Hindi across different regions of the country.
A Theme Inspired by Cultural Continuity
NCERT has designed the book around the symbolic meaning of the river Ganga, which is often associated with tradition, inclusivity, and an uninterrupted flow of life. Similarly, the textbook aims to portray Hindi as a language that connects generations and regions. Officials explained that the structure and content of the book are intended to reflect this sense of continuity, linking classical literature with modern thought.
Blend of Classical and Modern Literature
The content of ‘Ganga’ offers a diverse mix of literary works. It includes devotional poetry, nationalist writings, and contemporary prose, ensuring that students are exposed to different literary styles and themes. Notable selections include Raidas’ devotional compositions and the Ram-Lakshman-Parshuram dialogue from Ramcharitmanas, which introduce students to traditional narratives.
In addition, patriotic works such as Bharati Jai Vijayi Kare by Suryakant Tripathi ‘Nirala’ and Jhansi Ki Rani by Subhadra Kumari Chauhan aim to instill a sense of national pride. The inclusion of Bhawani Prasad Mishra’s Ghar Ki Yaad adds an emotional dimension, highlighting themes of memory and belonging.
Focus on Freedom Movement and National Heroes
A significant portion of the textbook is dedicated to India’s freedom struggle and the lives of lesser-known heroes. Students will read about Jhalkari Bai, who played an important role during the 1857 uprising, as well as Param Vir Chakra awardee Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon. These lessons are designed to provide insight into courage, sacrifice, and historical context.
The book also features excerpts from Lala Lajpat Rai’s address at a 1920 Congress session, emphasizing the importance of discipline and responsibility in the pursuit of freedom. Through such content, NCERT aims to connect historical values with present-day civic awareness.
Emphasis on Human Values and Social Themes
The prose section highlights works from well-known writers such as Munshi Premchand, Padumlal Punnalal Bakshi, and Shekhar Joshi. Their writings explore themes like empathy, creativity, and changing social dynamics. These lessons encourage students to think critically about society and their role within it.
The textbook also includes an interview with Lata Mangeshkar, offering students a glimpse into the life and experiences of one of India’s most respected cultural figures. Additional writings by Mohan Rakesh and Jagdish Chandra Mathur touch upon topics such as travel, societal expectations, and education, especially focusing on women’s roles.
Encouraging Language and Cultural Awareness
To support holistic learning, ‘Ganga’ incorporates works from poets like Saint Namdev and Maithili Sharan Gupt. Activities included in the book emphasize the importance of the mother tongue and aim to strengthen students’ connection with their linguistic roots.
NCERT has ensured that the textbook not only improves language skills but also fosters cultural awareness and ethical understanding among students.
Part of a Broader Curriculum Reform
The introduction of this textbook is part of NCERT’s phased rollout under the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023. While updated books for Classes 1 to 8 have already been implemented, the revision of Class 9 materials is currently underway and will continue in stages.
Through ‘Ganga’, NCERT aims to align classroom education with the broader goals of NEP 2020, focusing on a balanced approach that combines academic learning with cultural and value-based education
