Education – NCERT Class 9 English Textbook Promotes Multilingual Learning Approach
Education – The National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has introduced a newly designed English textbook for Class 9, aiming to strengthen the connection between language learning and India’s cultural diversity. Titled Kaveri, the book reflects the broader goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 by encouraging students to engage with multiple Indian languages while studying English.
Focus on Cultural Context and Student Connection
According to officials involved in the project, the textbook was developed after feedback from teachers who observed that students often struggled to relate to lesson content. To address this, the new material incorporates familiar cultural references and everyday contexts. The title Kaveri, symbolising a “River of Knowledge,” has been chosen to reflect a continuous and relatable learning journey.
The emphasis on cultural grounding is visible across chapters, where themes, examples, and narratives are closely tied to Indian life and traditions. This approach is expected to make learning more engaging and meaningful for students from diverse backgrounds.
Encouraging Multilingual Awareness in Classrooms
One of the defining features of the book is its clear push towards multilingual learning. The opening chapter, adapted from Sudha Murthy’s well-known work, introduces regional language elements while explaining their meanings in English. For instance, students are introduced to the word “Avva,” used for mother in parts of Karnataka.
Exercises included in the chapters go beyond reading comprehension. Students are encouraged to interact with peers and teachers to identify common family-related words across different Indian languages. Such activities aim to build awareness about linguistic diversity while fostering communication skills.
Literature and Creative Content from Renowned Authors
The textbook brings together a rich mix of literary works from prominent Indian writers and poets. It includes poetry and prose by figures such as Subramania Bharati, Rabindranath Tagore, Asha Nehemiah, and Mulk Raj Anand. These selections are intended to expose students to varied writing styles while keeping the content rooted in Indian thought and expression.
Grammar and language skills are also integrated into the lessons in a practical manner. Rather than relying on traditional formats, the book uses contextual examples and exercises that encourage active learning.
Skill-Based Learning Through Extended Exercises
Officials have highlighted that while individual chapters may be relatively concise, the accompanying exercises are detailed and extensive. In some cases, these activities span several pages, focusing on developing comprehension, critical thinking, and communication skills.
This shift reflects a broader move towards competency-based education, where the emphasis is not only on reading but also on applying knowledge in different contexts.
Inspirational Stories to Motivate Students
The book also includes sections designed to inspire students through real-life achievements. One chapter presents stories of Paralympic athletes, including para-archer Sheetal Devi and medal-winning athlete Deepa Malik. Their journeys are presented in engaging formats such as interviews, highlighting perseverance and determination.
Educators believe that such content can play an important role in shaping young minds by offering relatable role models and encouraging resilience.
Showcasing Traditional Crafts and Heritage
Another notable aspect of the textbook is its focus on India’s traditional crafts. Students are introduced to pottery styles from various regions, including Khurja, Jaipur, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Manipur. This section aims to broaden students’ understanding beyond textbooks and connect them with the country’s artistic heritage.
Concerns Over Visual Presentation
While the book has been widely appreciated for its fresh approach, some concerns have been raised regarding its heavy use of illustrations. Critics question whether such visual emphasis is suitable for students at the secondary level.
In response, NCERT officials have clarified that the design choice was intentional. They noted that many government school students benefit from visually engaging content, which helps make learning less intimidating and more accessible.
Availability and Pricing
The 276-page textbook is priced at Rs 140 and is now available through NCERT outlets, bookstores, and online platforms. Alongside the English version, language textbooks in Hindi, Urdu, and Sanskrit have also been released.
