Education – Centre Forms Panel to Review NCERT Class 8 Chapter Content

Education –  The Union government informed the Supreme Court on Friday that it has set up a high-level expert panel to examine the content of a Class 8 NCERT textbook chapter dealing with issues related to corruption in the judiciary. The move comes amid ongoing discussions about how sensitive topics are presented in school education.

Committee Formed with Legal Experts

Representing the Centre, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told a bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant that the newly formed committee includes some of the country’s most experienced legal minds. The panel features former Attorney General KK Venugopal, former Supreme Court judge Justice Indu Malhotra, and Justice Aniruddha Bose, who currently serves as the director of the National Judicial Academy. A vice chancellor has also been included to bring an academic perspective to the review process.

According to Mehta, the committee has been tasked with revisiting and drafting the chapter to ensure accuracy, balance, and appropriateness for school students. The initiative is aimed at refining how complex judicial issues are explained in educational material.

Supreme Court Hears Petition on Textbook Content

The development took place during the hearing of a petition filed by former NCERT member Pankaj Pushkar. The plea raised objections to a section in an earlier version of a Class 8 political science textbook. The passage in question suggested that some recent court rulings have been perceived as treating slum residents as encroachers in urban areas.

Pushkar argued that such statements could present a one-sided view of judicial decisions and potentially influence young minds. The petition sought judicial intervention to address the wording and interpretation in the textbook.

Court Emphasises Value of Constructive Criticism

While considering the matter, the Supreme Court bench declined to entertain the petition. The judges observed that the judiciary, as an institution, should not be overly sensitive to critical viewpoints, particularly when they are presented as part of academic discussion.

The Chief Justice noted that the passage reflects a perspective on certain judgments and falls within the broader framework of healthy criticism. He подчеркed that public institutions, including the judiciary, must remain open to scrutiny and differing opinions.
