DisasterTech – India has significantly strengthened its disaster management capabilities in Jammu and Kashmir by integrating advanced space-based technologies for real-time monitoring and damage assessment.

India has begun leveraging satellite-driven inputs to closely track natural disasters in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly focusing on floods, landslides, and forest fires. This move marks a major step toward improving early warning systems and response efficiency in a region frequently affected by environmental hazards.
Space Technology Enhancing Disaster Response
Authorities are now using geospatial tools to generate detailed insights into disaster situations. These include flood inundation maps, records of landslide-prone zones, and systems to detect forest fires. The data is made accessible through dedicated geoportals developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation, ensuring that agencies on the ground can act quickly and effectively.
In addition to web-based platforms, a specialised mobile application has been introduced to monitor forest fires. Strengthening Academic and Research Support
To further expand knowledge and innovation in space technology, dedicated institutions have been established. The Satish Dhawan Centre for Space Science at the Central University of Jammu provides students and researchers with access to advanced facilities, encouraging deeper understanding and practical engagement with space science.
Additionally, incubation and academic centres have been set up in northern India to promote research and skill development. These centres allow students from various institutions to participate in space-related projects, offering hands-on experience and fostering innovation in emerging technologies.
Opportunities for Students and Institutions
Students and educational institutions across the northern region are encouraged to submit project proposals related to space technology. This initiative allows participants to collaborate directly on projects supported by national space programmes. It also ensures that talent from smaller or regional institutions gets access to high-level research opportunities.
