He expressed gratitude for the support and engagement he has experienced across India, highlighting the partnerships built during his tenure. In his message, Kristensen noted that he looks back on the year with appreciation and forward with optimism, adding that he has shared a short video outlining achievements so far and priorities for the coming months.

Foundations of a Long-Standing Partnership

Diplomatic ties between India and Denmark date back to September 1949. Over the decades, the relationship has evolved steadily, shaped by shared democratic values and a common commitment to maintaining peace and stability at both regional and global levels. The two countries have consistently engaged across sectors ranging from trade and investment to sustainable development.

In recent years, cooperation has gained renewed momentum under a framework designed to deepen collaboration in areas critical to future growth and climate responsibility.

Green Strategic Partnership at the Core

A major turning point in bilateral relations came on September 28, 2020, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen held a virtual summit. During the meeting, the two leaders elevated ties to a Green Strategic Partnership, placing sustainability and environmental cooperation at the center of engagement.

This partnership focuses on advancing green energy, climate action, and sustainable solutions, while also strengthening economic and technological collaboration. It has since guided much of the diplomatic and policy-level interaction between the two governments.

High-Level Engagement in Copenhagen

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Denmark on May 3 and 4, 2022, further strengthened the partnership. The visit included bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Frederiksen and participation in the second India-Nordic Summit, co-hosted by India and Denmark.

During their talks, the two prime ministers reviewed the progress achieved under the Green Strategic Partnership and exchanged perspectives on regional and international developments. The discussions underscored a shared commitment to addressing global challenges through cooperation and innovation.

While in Copenhagen, Prime Minister Modi was received by Queen Margrethe II, who hosted an official dinner in his honor. He also interacted with members of the Indian community and addressed the India-Denmark Business Forum at the headquarters of the Confederation of Danish Industry, highlighting opportunities for expanded trade and investment.

Agreements Across Key Sectors

The 2022 visit resulted in the exchange of agreements and memorandums of understanding covering several strategic areas. These included migration and mobility, green shipping, cultural exchange, water resource management, skill development, and cooperation in animal husbandry and dairying.

Officials from both sides described the agreements as practical steps aimed at translating the broader strategic partnership into tangible outcomes that benefit businesses, institutions, and citizens in both countries.

India-Nordic Summit and Broader Regional Cooperation

On May 4, Prime Minister Modi joined the leaders of Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Finland for the second India-Nordic Summit. The meeting focused on strengthening engagement between India and the Nordic region, with emphasis on innovation, sustainable growth, and climate-friendly technologies.

A joint statement issued after the summit reaffirmed support for multilateralism and international cooperation. The leaders also expressed their intention to build stronger partnerships in trade, investment, and technology to drive economic progress and environmentally responsible development.

On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Modi held separate bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Finland, Iceland, Sweden, and Norway, further broadening the scope of India’s engagement with the Nordic countries.

As Ambassador Kristensen begins his second year in India, diplomatic exchanges and collaborative projects under the Green Strategic Partnership continue to shape a relationship that both governments describe as forward-looking and solution-oriented.
