Sandhu Expresses Gratitude After Appointment

Soon after the announcement, Sandhu shared his response through a message on the social media platform X. In his statement, he expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for entrusting him with the responsibility of serving Delhi as its Lieutenant Governor. He also thanked Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their confidence and support.

Sandhu stated that he considers the new role a privilege and reaffirmed his commitment to working for the welfare of Delhi’s residents. According to him, the position carries significant responsibility, and he intends to approach the role with dedication and humility while focusing on public service and governance.

A Career Shaped by Decades in Diplomacy

Before entering this administrative role, Sandhu built a long and distinguished career in India’s diplomatic service. A member of the 1988 batch of the Indian Foreign Service, he spent decades representing India in key diplomatic assignments, particularly in matters related to the United States.

He served as India’s Ambassador to the United States from February 2020 until January 2024, a period marked by expanding strategic ties between the two countries. During this time, India and the United States strengthened cooperation in areas such as defence, technology, and economic partnerships.

Sandhu’s association with the Indian mission in Washington spans several phases of his career. Earlier, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission between July 2013 and January 2017. In the late 1990s, he also worked as First Secretary for political affairs, where he was responsible for engaging with members of the US Congress and supporting diplomatic dialogue between the two countries.

Role in Strengthening Strategic Partnerships

Following his tenure as ambassador, Sandhu continued to remain involved in strategic policy discussions. He served as an advisor to the board of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum and later became chair of its Geopolitical Institute.

During this period, he contributed to shaping discussions on global developments and strengthening economic and strategic collaboration between India and its international partners. His work with the forum included supporting initiatives linked to major geopolitical and economic frameworks such as the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor.

He was also associated with discussions surrounding broader international partnerships including the Quad grouping and the I2U2 framework involving India, Israel, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates. These platforms focus on cooperation across areas such as infrastructure development, technology, and regional stability.

Involvement in Major Diplomatic Events

Throughout his diplomatic career, Sandhu has played an important role in organising several high-profile international engagements. Among them was Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s widely attended address at Madison Square Garden in New York in 2014, which highlighted India’s outreach to the global Indian diaspora.

He also contributed to the planning and coordination of US President Donald Trump’s visit to India in 2020, as well as Prime Minister Modi’s state visit to Washington in 2024. These events were considered significant milestones in the evolving relationship between the two countries.

Transition from Diplomacy to Governance

Sandhu’s move from international diplomacy to the administrative leadership of Delhi marks a notable transition in his public service career. With nearly four decades of experience in foreign policy and strategic engagement, he now steps into a role focused on governance within one of India’s most prominent Union Territories.

Observers believe his experience in handling complex international partnerships and policy coordination may bring a distinctive administrative perspective to the position.

As Delhi’s new Lieutenant Governor, Sandhu is expected to work closely with the Union government and local authorities while addressing governance priorities in the national capital.
