Communism – Ramasamy Nallakannu, one of the most respected faces of the Communist movement in Tamil Nadu, passed away on Wednesday afternoon at the age of 101. The senior CPI leader breathed his last at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai after battling age-related health complications for several weeks. Tamil Nadu Minister PK Sekar Babu expressed profound grief over the passing of Nallakannu, recalling him as a leader who stood firmly against religious extremism and dominant political forces. Speaking to journalists in Chennai, the minister said Nallakannu’s life was defined by unwavering principles and personal sacrifice.
According to Sekar Babu, the veteran leader consistently opposed divisive ideologies and worked to uphold secular values. For 24 days, a team of specialists closely monitored his condition. Doctors provided continuous advanced medical care as his health showed intermittent signs of improvement and decline. Despite sustained efforts by a multidisciplinary team, his condition worsened in the early hours of Wednesday.
Hospital authorities said his response to treatment gradually diminished, and he was placed on advanced life support. By early afternoon, multiple organ failure was reported, and he was declared dead at approximately 1:55 pm.
The hospital administration extended condolences to his family and acknowledged the dedicated efforts of the medical professionals involved in his care. The statement also thanked the Government of Tamil Nadu for facilitating the necessary medical support during his treatment.
