Protest March Leads to Confrontation at Campus Gate

The incident unfolded on February 26 when members of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union organized a march from the university campus toward the Ministry of Education. The demonstration, described by organizers as a “Long March,” was part of an ongoing agitation over administrative and policy-related concerns.

According to Delhi Police, the situation deteriorated when protesters attempted to move beyond the campus premises. Officers stationed at the university gate intervened, leading to a heated exchange that soon turned into a physical clash.

Police officials alleged that some students threw stones and footwear at personnel and engaged in aggressive behavior, including biting officers during the scuffle. Students, however, disputed the police version, claiming that officers resorted to excessive force while trying to disperse the gathering.

Injuries Reported on Both Sides

Authorities confirmed that nearly 25 police personnel sustained injuries during the confrontation. Among those hurt were senior officers, including ACP Ved Prakash, ACP Sanghamitra, SHO Atul Tyagi, and SHO Ajai Yadav. The injured officers received medical attention, though officials did not disclose the severity of their injuries.

Students’ representatives stated that several demonstrators were also injured in the clash, alleging that force was used disproportionately. They maintained that the protest was intended to be peaceful and accused the police of escalating the situation.

Detentions and Legal Action

Delhi Police detained 51 protesters following the unrest. Those taken into custody included JNUSU president Aditi Mishra and former president Nitish Kumar. The detentions occurred after students reportedly attempted to proceed with the rally beyond the campus gate despite police restrictions.

An FIR has been registered at Vasant Kunj North police station in connection with the incident. The case has been filed under sections 221, 121(1), 132, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Officials confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the sequence of events and identify those responsible for acts of violence.

Police sources indicated that video footage from the scene is being reviewed as part of the inquiry. Authorities have reiterated that appropriate legal steps will follow based on the findings.

Background of the Ongoing Agitation

The protest was part of a broader movement on campus linked to recent remarks made by JNU Vice Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit during a podcast discussion. Her comments, which reportedly addressed the implementation of University Grants Commission norms, triggered debate among sections of the student community.

In addition to concerns over UGC guidelines, the agitation has focused on the rustication of certain JNUSU office bearers and the proposed Rohith Act. Student leaders have argued that these issues raise questions about administrative transparency and student rights.

University authorities have not issued a detailed statement regarding Thursday’s clash. However, campus sources indicated that efforts are being made to restore normalcy and prevent further disruptions.

Situation Under Watch

The security presence around the campus has been increased as a precautionary measure. Police officials stated that maintaining law and order remains their priority, while also acknowledging the right to peaceful protest within legal limits.

As investigations continue, both student groups and law enforcement agencies appear firm in their respective positions. The developments have once again drawn attention to campus politics in the national capital and the challenges of balancing protest rights with public order.

Further updates are expected as authorities examine evidence and determine the next course of action.
