Aviation – Assam Signs Pact to Study Five New Airports

Aviation – The Government of Assam has taken a significant step toward strengthening its aviation network by signing an agreement with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to conduct pre-feasibility studies for five proposed greenfield airports across the state. The agreement was formalized at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati in the presence of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Agreement Signed for Preliminary Assessment

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed on Friday by Transport Commissioner and Secretary Akashdeep on behalf of the state government and AAI Chairman Vipin Kumar. The study will assess the technical, environmental, and economic viability of developing new airports at Manas National Park, Umrangshu, Majuli, Diphu, and Charaideo.

Officials said the pre-feasibility study is the first formal step toward determining whether these locations can support new aviation infrastructure. The findings will guide future planning, including potential investment and phased development.

Focus on Tourism and Strategic Needs

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Sarma expressed appreciation to AAI for initiating the assessment process. He emphasized that an airport near Manas National Park could serve multiple purposes. Apart from meeting strategic and security requirements, the facility could significantly enhance wildlife tourism in the region, which is already known for its biodiversity.

He noted that improved air access would likely make the park more accessible to domestic and international visitors, encouraging sustainable tourism growth while supporting conservation-linked livelihoods.

Enhancing Regional Connectivity

The proposed airports at Majuli, Umrangshu, Diphu, and Charaideo are expected to improve travel links within Assam and to neighboring states. According to the Chief Minister, better connectivity would help attract more visitors, stimulate local businesses, and create new employment opportunities.

He highlighted that enhanced aviation infrastructure can serve as a catalyst for economic development by linking remote areas with larger commercial centers. Improved accessibility is also expected to benefit sectors such as agriculture, handicrafts, and small-scale industries in these regions.

Proposal to Upgrade Rupsi Airport

During the event, the Chief Minister also urged AAI to consider upgrading Rupsi Airport into a fully operational airport. He pointed out its strategic location near the Siliguri Corridor, often referred to as the Chicken’s Neck, which connects the northeastern states to the rest of India.

Strengthening aviation facilities in this area, he said, would improve both civilian mobility and logistical preparedness, given its geographical importance.

Call for Greater International Connectivity

In addition to the proposed greenfield projects, Sarma requested AAI to expand international flight operations from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. Increased global connectivity, he said, would position Assam more prominently as a gateway to the Northeast and to neighboring Southeast Asian countries.

Officials believe that broader international links could encourage trade, tourism, and cross-border collaboration, further integrating the state into regional economic networks.

Broader Development Vision

The Chief Minister remarked that the development of these airports could establish a model for other states seeking to improve regional air infrastructure. By combining strategic planning with tourism promotion and economic objectives, Assam aims to create a balanced aviation growth framework.

He added that once operational, the new airports are expected to strengthen communication networks, support industrial expansion, and reinforce Assam’s role in the broader regional landscape.

The signing ceremony was attended by several senior officials and public representatives, including MLA Dharmeswar Konwar, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang, NC Hills Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member Debolal Gorlosa, Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, and Civil Aviation Secretary to the Government of India Samir Kumar Sinha, among others.
