Police Action and Legal Justification

Addressing reporters after voting concluded for the Assam Assembly elections, Sarma said the police were simply carrying out their responsibilities. He clarified that the action stemmed from a formal complaint and emphasized that law enforcement agencies are obligated to respond when a case is registered.

According to him, the police were not acting independently or targeting anyone without cause. Instead, they were following due process as required under the law. He added that officers are expected to investigate and act when an individual is named in a complaint, underscoring that such steps are part of routine legal procedure.

Earlier, Assam Police had conducted a search at Khera’s residence in Delhi in connection with the case. However, he was not present at the time of the visit.

Political Exchange Intensifies

The issue gained further attention after Pawan Khera accused the chief minister of using the police machinery against him. The allegations have added to the ongoing political friction between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress during the election period.

Sarma rejected these accusations and maintained that there was no misuse of power. He reiterated that the complaint involving his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, was being handled through lawful means and that no individual is above the legal process.

Remarks on Gaurav Gogoi Spark Controversy

The chief minister also made pointed remarks about Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, raising questions about his personal life and family background. Sarma commented on Gogoi attending polling with his mother instead of his wife, suggesting it reflected broader issues.

He further alleged that Gogoi had failed to uphold certain cultural and national values within his own family, questioning his suitability to represent the people. These remarks drew attention as they shifted the political discourse beyond policy matters into personal territory.

Continuing his criticism, Sarma claimed that Gogoi’s family was largely absent from public view throughout the campaign. He contrasted this with what he described as a strong sense of identity and pride among Assamese people, referencing Gogoi’s late father, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

Broader Allegations and Campaign Rhetoric

In another statement, Sarma raised concerns about religious and cultural identity, suggesting it was unusual for a political leader with Ahom lineage to have a family that does not reflect local traditions. He also accused Gogoi of aligning with Khera to create false narratives against his family.

The chief minister additionally criticized the Congress for invoking the legacy of late singer Zubeen Garg during the campaign. He questioned whether such gestures would continue after the elections, implying that they were politically motivated.

BJP’s Electoral Outlook and Media Criticism

Sarma expressed confidence in the BJP’s chances in the Assam Assembly elections, stating that the party was in a strong position. He outlined scenarios based on potential seat counts, noting that a significant victory could even impact the presence of an opposition leader in the विधानसभा.

While projecting optimism, he also acknowledged that electoral outcomes ultimately depend on public mandate. He refrained from making long-term predictions but emphasized that the party’s current standing appeared favorable.

The chief minister also took aim at sections of the regional media, warning of consequences if they continued what he described as biased coverage. Additionally, he raised allegations against certain opposition candidates, including claims related to land dealings.

Focus on New Leadership

Highlighting the BJP’s strategy, Sarma said the party has been promoting younger leaders and fresh faces in the political landscape. He positioned this approach as a contrast to the opposition, suggesting that it reflects a forward-looking vision for the state.

As the election process unfolds, the exchange of sharp statements and allegations indicates an increasingly intense political environment in Assam.
