Accident – Speeding Bus Triggers Deadly Crash and Violent Protest in Delhi
Accident – Two people lost their lives and two others were injured after a speeding Delhi Transport Corporation cluster bus collided with several vehicles in the Nihal Vihar area of West Delhi on Monday morning. The accident triggered public anger, leading to protests and vandalism at the scene. Police later detained the driver involved in the incident and launched an investigation into the events that followed.
Collision on Busy Najafgarh–Nangloi Road
According to police officials, the accident occurred around 9:45 a.m. when the cluster bus, travelling from the Najafgarh side, lost control and struck multiple road users on the busy Najafgarh–Nangloi Road. The bus reportedly hit a scooter, a motorcycle, a rickshaw, and several pedestrians moving along the roadside.
Authorities said emergency teams reached the location within minutes after receiving information about the crash. Police officers quickly cordoned off the area and attempted to stabilize the situation as injured individuals were transported to nearby hospitals.
Victims Identified by Police
Officials later confirmed that two men died as a result of the accident. The victims were identified as Ravi Kant Sharma, 32, a resident of Nihal Vihar who was riding a scooter, and Kamal Jeet, 39, from Shiv Ram Park, who was travelling on a motorcycle when the collision occurred.
Both were rushed to medical facilities following the crash. Sharma was taken to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, while Kamal Jeet was shifted to Maharaja Agrasen Hospital in Punjabi Bagh. Doctors later declared both men dead.
Injured Individuals Undergoing Treatment
Apart from the fatalities, two other people sustained injuries in the incident. Aman, 23, and a 20-year-old woman, both residents of Shiv Ram Park in Nangloi, were travelling together on a motorcycle when they were caught in the crash.
Police said the injured woman was admitted to Mansa Ram Hospital in Nihal Vihar for treatment, while Aman also suffered injuries during the collision. Their condition was reported to be stable, according to preliminary medical updates.
Public Outrage Leads to Protests
Soon after the accident became known, a large crowd gathered at the location. According to police estimates, nearly 500 people assembled at the scene, expressing anger over the tragic incident.
During the protest, the crowd reportedly damaged the bus involved in the collision. Tensions escalated further when another bus approaching from the Nangloi side was stopped and set on fire by individuals in the crowd.
Videos recorded by bystanders quickly spread across social media platforms, showing one of the buses engulfed in flames as smoke rose above the road.
Passengers Evacuated Before Bus Was Burned
Police officials later confirmed that passengers travelling in the bus that was set on fire had been safely asked to step down before the vehicle was torched. This helped prevent further casualties during the unrest.
Security personnel were deployed in the area to disperse the crowd and prevent additional violence. Authorities said the situation was eventually brought under control.
Police Register Two Separate Cases
Delhi Police have registered two different cases related to the incident. The first case concerns the fatal crash and has been filed against the driver of the bus that caused the accident. The driver has been taken into custody and is being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
A second case has been filed against unidentified individuals who allegedly participated in damaging the bus and setting another vehicle on fire during the protest.
Investigators are reviewing available video footage and eyewitness accounts to identify those responsible for the vandalism.
Investigation Underway
Police officials said further inquiry is underway to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the crash. Authorities are also examining whether excessive speed, negligence, or mechanical failure contributed to the accident.
Traffic authorities have urged drivers to follow road safety regulations and maintain control of their vehicles, particularly on crowded urban roads where pedestrians and two-wheelers are frequently present.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns about road safety and public transport operations in the national capital.
