Punjab Politics – Amit Shah Calls for BJP Opportunity in 2027 Assembly Polls
Punjab Politics – Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday appealed to voters in Punjab to consider supporting the Bharatiya Janata Party in the 2027 state Assembly elections, stating that a change in leadership could help address several long-standing challenges in the state, particularly the issue of drug abuse.

Speaking at a public gathering titled the “Badlav” rally in Killi Chahlan village of Moga district, Shah said Punjab had been facing multiple problems including rising debt, narcotics trafficking, corruption, religious conversions and increasing gangster activity. He urged citizens to consider a new political direction in the next Assembly election.
Appeal for Political Change in Punjab
During his address, Shah encouraged voters to give the BJP a chance to form a government in Punjab, noting that the state had already experienced leadership under other major political parties.
According to him, successive governments led by the Congress, the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Aam Aadmi Party had all been given opportunities by the electorate. Shah suggested that the time had come for a different approach and asked residents to support the BJP in the upcoming electoral contest.
He said that the rally in Moga marked an important moment in the party’s preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections and signaled the beginning of its political outreach campaign in the state.
Criticism of the Current Punjab Government
Shah also criticised the administration headed by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, accusing it of failing to address governance concerns effectively. He alleged that corruption had become widespread within the state government.
The Union minister further claimed that the administration had effectively become a financial resource channel for Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal, a charge that has been strongly disputed by the ruling party in the past.
The remarks formed a central part of Shah’s speech as he attempted to contrast the BJP’s proposed governance approach with that of the current state leadership.
BJP Preparing to Contest Independently
Shah also spoke about the BJP’s evolving political strategy in Punjab. In earlier elections, the party had contested as a junior partner in alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal.
However, he indicated that the BJP now intends to compete independently in the state with the goal of forming its own government. According to Shah, the party believes it has expanded its organisational base and is prepared to present itself as an alternative governing option.
The announcement reflects the BJP’s broader efforts to strengthen its presence in Punjab’s political landscape ahead of the next Assembly elections.
Focus on Drug Control and Development
Addressing the persistent drug problem in Punjab, Shah argued that coordinated governance between the central government and the state administration could help tackle the issue more effectively.
He referred to the concept of a “double-engine government,” a phrase often used by the BJP to describe situations where both the central and state governments are led by the same party. According to Shah, such coordination can accelerate development initiatives and improve administrative efficiency.
The Union minister also pointed to several actions taken by the central government in other parts of the country. He mentioned the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and said that efforts to reduce Naxalism had made significant progress in recent years.
Concerns Over Economy and Employment
Shah additionally raised concerns about economic conditions in Punjab, claiming that some industries were moving away from the state. He argued that previous governments had not adequately addressed unemployment or economic stagnation.
He urged voters to consider supporting the BJP if they wanted new investment, job creation and a renewed focus on economic development in the region.
Strategic Importance of the Malwa Region
The rally in Moga was conducted under extensive security arrangements. The district lies in the Malwa region, which is widely regarded as a key political battleground in Punjab.
Malwa accounts for 69 out of the state’s 117 Assembly seats, making it the largest and most influential electoral region in Punjab. Political parties often concentrate significant campaign efforts there because outcomes in Malwa frequently shape the overall results of state elections.
With the BJP beginning its campaign outreach from this region, the party appears to be positioning itself for a stronger role in Punjab politics as the 2027 Assembly elections approach.
