Geopolitics – Internet Curbs Imposed in Kashmir After Protests

Geopolitics –  Mobile internet services across the Kashmir Valley were slowed on Monday after demonstrations erupted in response to the reported killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Authorities described the step as a preventive move aimed at maintaining public order amid rising tensions.

Protests Follow Confirmation of Airstrike

According to official sources, Khamenei was killed in an airstrike in Tehran on Saturday during a joint military operation carried out by Israel and the United States. Iranian state media confirmed the development a day later, sparking strong reactions in several countries, including India.

The confirmation prompted gatherings in parts of Kashmir, where a sizeable Shia population resides. Officials estimated that nearly 1.5 million Shias live in the region. Demonstrations were reported from Srinagar’s Lal Chowk and Saida Kadal areas, as well as districts such as Budgam, Bandipora, Anantnag and Pulwama.

Witnesses said groups of protesters assembled in public spaces, expressing grief and chanting slogans critical of the United States and Israel. In some areas, participants were seen engaging in traditional mourning practices, including chest beating.

Authorities Cite Precautionary Measures

Government officials said the decision to throttle high-speed mobile internet was taken as a precaution to prevent the spread of misinformation and to reduce the risk of further unrest. Internet speeds were reduced across all major telecom networks operating in the Valley.

An official familiar with the matter stated that such steps are part of standard security protocols during sensitive situations. “The objective is to ensure stability and prevent any escalation,” the official said, adding that the restrictions would remain under review.

There were no immediate reports of large-scale violence linked to the protests, though security personnel were deployed in several locations as a precautionary measure.

Police Advisory to Media Outlets

Amid heightened emotions, local police issued a public advisory addressed to media organisations and digital news platforms. The advisory urged journalists to maintain accuracy and restraint while reporting on the developments.

Authorities specifically called on media outlets to avoid publishing unverified claims, speculative content or rumours. They stressed that all information should be confirmed through reliable and authoritative sources before dissemination.

The statement also advised against using sensational headlines that could contribute to panic or misunderstanding. Police officials underlined that responsible journalism plays a crucial role in preserving public trust, particularly during periods of uncertainty.

Global Reactions and Local Impact

The airstrike in Tehran has had repercussions beyond the Middle East, with reactions emerging from different parts of the world. In Kashmir, where international political developments often resonate strongly, the news triggered an emotional response among sections of the population.

Security analysts note that the region’s sensitivity to geopolitical events requires careful handling by both authorities and media. While the internet curbs may inconvenience residents, officials argue that temporary restrictions are intended to prevent the rapid spread of inflammatory content online.

As of Monday evening, authorities continued to monitor the situation across the Valley. There was no official timeline for restoring full mobile internet speeds, though officials indicated that restrictions could be eased depending on ground conditions.

The situation remains under close watch, with security forces maintaining a visible presence in key areas to deter any potential disturbances.
