Elections – Modi Outlines Six Promises Ahead of Bengal Assembly Polls
Elections – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced a set of six assurances for the people of West Bengal, stating that these would be implemented if the Bharatiya Janata Party secures victory in the upcoming assembly elections. Addressing a public gathering in Haldia, he sharply criticised the current administration led by Mamata Banerjee, alleging governance failures and urging voters to bring about a political shift.

Focus on Governance and Accountability
Speaking in a region considered politically significant, Modi claimed that the present government has hindered the state’s progress. He asserted that a BJP-led administration would prioritise transparency and accountability, ensuring that public officials remain answerable to citizens. According to him, the party aims to replace what he described as an environment of fear with one built on public trust.
He also stressed that government schemes and welfare benefits would reach only legitimate beneficiaries, while those identified as illegal entrants would not be permitted to remain in the country. The emphasis, he said, would be on fair and lawful distribution of resources.
Action on Corruption and Crimes
One of the key assurances made during the rally was related to corruption and law enforcement. Modi stated that pending cases involving financial irregularities and crimes against women would be reopened. He further claimed that individuals found guilty in such matters would face strict legal consequences, including imprisonment.
This commitment, he suggested, reflects the party’s broader stance on governance reforms and its intention to strengthen institutional accountability within the state.
Economic Growth and Employment Concerns
The prime minister also addressed concerns around employment and economic activity in West Bengal. He accused the current administration of weakening the private sector and failing to generate adequate job opportunities for the youth.
According to Modi, an atmosphere of uncertainty discourages investment, whereas a stable and predictable environment encourages businesses to expand. He expressed confidence that a change in government would help attract investment and create employment opportunities across sectors.
Pay Commission and Public Sector Reforms
Among the promises, Modi highlighted the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission for state government employees, including teachers and staff in related sectors. He said this move would improve financial security for government workers and bring parity with central government standards.
Additionally, he indicated that administrative reforms would be introduced to enhance efficiency and improve service delivery across departments.
Political Contest and Electoral Signals
Referring to previous election outcomes, Modi pointed to the victory of opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari in Nandigram during the 2021 elections as a sign of changing political dynamics. He expressed optimism that similar results could be seen in upcoming contests, including in key constituencies.
He also noted the turnout at the rally, despite challenging weather conditions, as an indication of growing public interest in political change.
Call for Coordinated Governance
The prime minister advocated for what he described as a “double-engine” model of governance, where both the central and state governments work in coordination. He argued that such alignment would accelerate development and ensure smoother implementation of policies.
He further stated that sectors like fisheries and seafood could be strengthened, with the central government already allocating resources and setting up dedicated mechanisms to support fisher communities. According to him, these efforts could be expanded further under a new state administration.
Development Narrative and Voter Appeal
Throughout his address, Modi emphasised the need for a forward-looking development agenda. He suggested that aligning state policies with national growth initiatives would benefit West Bengal in the long term.
The speech formed part of the BJP’s broader campaign strategy, focusing on governance, economic growth, and administrative reforms as key themes ahead of the elections.
