Elections – Controversy Deepens in West Bengal Over Viral Video Row
Elections – Tensions have intensified in poll-bound West Bengal after a controversial video triggered a fresh round of political accusations and counterclaims, drawing multiple parties into a heated exchange just weeks before voting begins.

Allegations of Conspiracy Over Viral Video
Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) leader Humayun Kabir on Friday alleged that the circulation of a purported sting video was part of a planned attempt to damage his image ahead of the Assembly elections. Speaking at a public gathering in Islampur, Kabir questioned the timing of the video’s release, noting that it was originally recorded months earlier but surfaced only recently.
He claimed the delay in making the footage public indicated a deliberate strategy and said he would challenge the matter legally. Kabir also alleged that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee maintains a working relationship with both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), further intensifying the political rhetoric surrounding the issue.
Alliance Breakdown Following Controversy
The situation took a significant turn when the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), led by Asaduddin Owaisi, withdrew from its alliance with AJUP. The decision came after concerns were raised regarding the content of the viral video, in which Kabir was allegedly heard referring to a financial deal involving a large sum of money.
Kabir has strongly denied the authenticity of the video, stating that it was fabricated using artificial intelligence technology. Despite his denial, AIMIM cited the need to protect the integrity and trust of the Muslim community as the primary reason for ending the alliance.
Kabir’s Political Journey and Rising Profile
Humayun Kabir has remained a prominent figure in recent months, particularly after announcing plans to construct a Babri Masjid in Murshidabad. His actions drew widespread attention and led to disciplinary measures from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), including suspension and eventual expulsion.
Following his exit from TMC, Kabir established AJUP and positioned himself as an independent political voice. However, the latest controversy has placed him back at the center of political debate in the state.
Reactions From Rival Parties
Leaders from the ruling TMC have sharply criticized Kabir. Party MLA Arindam Guin described him as untrustworthy and accused him of working in coordination with the BJP to divide minority votes. The accusation reflects broader concerns among political parties about vote fragmentation in closely contested constituencies.
Meanwhile, AIMIM reiterated its long-standing position on the socio-economic condition of Muslims in West Bengal, stating that the community continues to face neglect and economic challenges. The party emphasized that its political decisions are guided by the interests of marginalized groups.
BJP Distances Itself From Controversy
At a separate press conference held after the release of the BJP’s election manifesto, senior leader Amit Shah rejected any suggestion of a connection between his party and Kabir. He stated that the BJP and Kabir represent entirely different political positions and dismissed claims of any form of cooperation.
Shah also criticized Mamata Banerjee, suggesting that political narratives in the state are sometimes shaped through questionable means, including the use of videos during election periods.
Election Schedule and Political Climate
West Bengal is set to vote in two phases for its 294-member Assembly, with polling scheduled for April 23 and April 29. The counting of votes will take place on May 4. As the election dates approach, political tensions are expected to remain high, with parties intensifying their campaigns and sharpening their messaging.
The controversy surrounding the viral video has added another layer of complexity to an already competitive electoral landscape, highlighting the role of digital content and political narratives in shaping public opinion.
