Election –  Tensions rose in political circles on Wednesday after fresh allegations emerged regarding the conduct of voting in the recent Rajya Sabha elections, with opposition leaders questioning the circumstances behind the absence of several legislators during a crucial contest.

Rajya sabha election vote row

Claims of Pressure and Missing Legislators

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Misa Bharti alleged that the unexpected absence of four legislators—one from her party and three from the Congress—had a direct impact on the outcome of the election for five Rajya Sabha seats in Bihar. The contest saw six candidates in the fray, making each vote critical.

According to Bharti, the situation has raised serious concerns among opposition parties. She suggested that the missing votes were not a coincidence but may have been influenced by external pressure. Speaking to reporters, she said the absence of these lawmakers had strengthened suspicions of possible inducements or coercion during the election process.

Allegations Involving Central Agencies

Bharti further claimed that investigative agencies, including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Enforcement Directorate (ED), and the Income Tax Department, may have been used to exert pressure on certain legislators. She pointed to reports indicating that some lawmakers from Bihar had pending cases and were allegedly threatened in connection with those matters.

These claims, however, have not been independently verified, and there has been no official response from the agencies named in the allegations at the time of reporting.

Prime Minister Acknowledges Retiring Members

On the same day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Rajya Sabha during the ongoing budget session, focusing on the contributions of members who are set to retire. He expressed gratitude for their service and wished them success in their future roles.

The Prime Minister highlighted that political careers do not end with retirement from one position, remarking that public life continues to offer opportunities for contribution. He also noted that each member leaves a distinct mark on parliamentary proceedings through their experience and perspective.

Overview of the Rajya Sabha Elections

The biennial elections were conducted to fill 37 vacancies across 10 states. Of these, 26 candidates secured their seats without opposition, reflecting consensus in several regions. Voting was required for the remaining 11 seats, including five from Bihar, where the contest drew significant attention.

The outcome of these elections holds importance for party strength in the Upper House, particularly as legislative debates and policy decisions continue to rely on numerical support.

Nitish Kumar Files Nomination

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, one of the longest-serving leaders in the state, formally entered the race for the Rajya Sabha. He filed his nomination in the presence of senior leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Kumar, who has been a central figure in Bihar politics for over two decades, stated that he would continue to support the functioning of the new state cabinet. His move to the Upper House is seen as a strategic political decision within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Other Candidates in the Fray

Alongside Nitish Kumar, other NDA-backed candidates also submitted their nominations. These included Upendra Kushwaha and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Nitin Nabin. Their participation reflects the alliance’s effort to strengthen its representation in the Rajya Sabha.

As the election results continue to shape political alignments, the allegations raised by opposition leaders are likely to remain a point of debate in the coming days.
