Agriculture – Government Highlights Growth Measures and Rising Farmer Earnings
Agriculture – The Union government on Tuesday outlined a series of steps it says have strengthened the agriculture sector, with officials claiming a significant rise in farmers’ earnings over recent years. Speaking in the Lok Sabha during Question Hour, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan pointed to increased crop production and sustained policy support as key factors behind this progress.

Government Cites Policy Support for Agriculture Growth
Chouhan stated that a combination of initiatives, including the provision of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops and continued fertiliser subsidies, has contributed to improved outcomes in the farming sector. According to him, these measures have not only ensured better price security for farmers but also reduced input costs, helping boost overall income levels.
He further emphasized that agricultural output has witnessed steady growth, supported by improved access to resources and government-backed schemes. These interventions, he said, are part of a broader strategy aimed at strengthening rural livelihoods and ensuring long-term sustainability in farming.
Claims of Increased Farmer Income
Addressing concerns raised by opposition members, the minister asserted that farmers’ incomes have seen a notable rise. He maintained that, in many instances, earnings have doubled, while in certain cases they have increased even further, reaching up to three or four times previous levels.
These remarks came in response to questions from Trinamool Congress leader Saugata Roy, who argued that the government had not fulfilled its earlier commitment to double farmers’ income. Chouhan, however, reiterated that the government remains committed to recognizing and rewarding the efforts of farmers through continued policy support.
Heated Exchanges During Question Hour
The discussion also witnessed interruptions, with Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav raising multiple supplementary questions. The repeated exchanges prompted Speaker Om Birla to step in and call for order in the House.
Birla urged members to maintain decorum during proceedings, advising them to keep their questions concise. He also requested ministers to provide brief and focused responses to ensure smooth functioning of the session.
Focus on Strengthening Cooperative Sector
In a separate response, Minister of State for Cooperation Krishan Pal highlighted efforts to boost the cooperative sector. He informed the House that financial assistance worth Rs 5 lakh crore has been distributed over the past five years to support cooperative institutions across the country.
According to Pal, these initiatives are aimed at improving access to credit, enhancing infrastructure, and enabling cooperatives to play a more active role in rural development. The government views the cooperative framework as a key pillar in expanding economic opportunities for farmers and small-scale producers.
Ongoing Debate Over Agricultural Outcomes
While the government continues to stress progress in the agriculture sector, opposition members remain critical of the claims regarding income growth. The issue of farmer welfare and income stability continues to be a central topic of debate in Parliament, reflecting broader concerns about rural economic conditions.
As discussions continue, the focus is expected to remain on evaluating the effectiveness of existing policies and identifying areas where further support may be required to ensure inclusive growth in the agriculture sector.
