China often conducts patrols and military exercises in the area of Taiwan, which it claims as its own. Taiwan, which has its own government, has often accused Beijing of intimidating the island with military pressure.
According to the Taipei Times, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) accused China of “transnational suppression and political manipulation” following a Chinese public security agency’s allegation that Taiwanese nationals were behind a smuggling scheme involving a Chinese-crewed vessel that damaged undersea cables earlier this year.
Concerns were raised when a Taiwanese court found the Chinese captain of the Togo-registered ship Hong Tai 58 guilty of purposefully breaking subsea cables off Taiwan in February and sentenced him to three years in jail in June.
Two Taiwanese people planned a multi-vessel operation that was illegally bringing frozen commodities into China, according to the public security office in Weihai, China’s Shandong Province. According to Taipei Times, these conclusions from Chinese officials came after seven Hong Tai 58 crew members were interviewed.
In a statement, the MAC rejected the Chinese conclusions.
