Council outlines priorities for April session

Jamal Fares Alrowaiei, Bahrain’s permanent representative to the United Nations and current president of the Security Council, presented the council’s programme of work during a briefing on Wednesday. He highlighted that Bahrain’s broader approach within the council is guided by four central objectives: strengthening peace and stability, addressing both longstanding and emerging security challenges, promoting inclusivity in global decision-making, and reinforcing multilateral cooperation.

These guiding principles, he explained, are not limited to formal discussions but are also reflected in the council’s broader engagements and initiatives. For April, these priorities translate into a concentrated effort to examine developments in sensitive regions across West Asia, where ongoing tensions continue to demand international attention.

Focus on regional conflicts and diplomacy

Alrowaiei noted that the council’s agenda would closely follow the evolving situation in countries such as Iran and Lebanon, as well as developments in Palestinian territories, including Gaza and the West Bank. These regions remain central to international diplomatic efforts, particularly as geopolitical dynamics shift and humanitarian concerns persist.

The council is expected to hold discussions aimed at evaluating current conditions, encouraging dialogue among involved parties, and reinforcing commitments to international law. The emphasis will remain on preventing escalation while supporting diplomatic pathways toward long-term stability.

Security Council condemns attacks on peacekeepers

Alongside its regional focus, the Security Council has also strongly reacted to recent incidents involving United Nations peacekeeping forces in Lebanon. Members of the council condemned attacks that resulted in the deaths of three Indonesian peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

In an official statement, council members reiterated their full support for UNIFIL and stressed the importance of ensuring the safety and security of all peacekeeping personnel. They urged all parties involved in the conflict to avoid actions that could put peacekeepers at risk and to respect the operational freedom of UN missions as required under international law.

Call for investigation and accountability

The council emphasised that peacekeepers must never be targeted under any circumstances. It called on the United Nations to carry out a thorough investigation into the incidents through UNIFIL mechanisms. The findings, it said, should be shared with the countries contributing troops, in line with established Security Council resolutions.

The statement also referenced previous resolutions that underline the responsibility of all parties to protect peacekeeping forces and maintain accountability. These measures are considered essential to preserving the credibility and effectiveness of UN missions operating in conflict zones.

Renewed commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty

In its response, the council also reiterated its strong commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. Members urged all involved parties to fully implement existing Security Council resolutions, particularly those aimed at maintaining peace along the Blue Line, a key area of tension between Lebanon and Israel.

Recent incidents have not only resulted in fatalities but have also left several peacekeepers injured. The council noted that multiple UNIFIL positions have been affected in recent weeks, highlighting the increasing risks faced by personnel amid ongoing hostilities in the region.

Rising concerns amid continued tensions

The developments come at a time when the broader West Asia region remains volatile, with overlapping conflicts and political uncertainties contributing to instability. The Security Council’s April agenda reflects growing international concern over these issues and the need for coordinated global action.

As discussions unfold, the council is expected to balance immediate security concerns with long-term diplomatic strategies, aiming to reduce tensions while supporting peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts across affected regions.
