Iran – A solemn condolence gathering was organized at the Embassy of Iran in New Delhi following the reported death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed earlier this month during military strikes carried out by Israel and the United States. The meeting brought together diplomats, political leaders, and members of the community to offer prayers and express sympathy with the people of Iran during a period of national mourning.
Leaders and Diplomats Attend Prayer Meeting
Among those present at the memorial event was Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Kapil Sibal, who arrived at the embassy to convey his condolences. Speaking to journalists after the ceremony, Sibal described the circumstances surrounding Khamenei’s death as deeply concerning and emphasized the importance of peaceful dialogue in resolving international disputes.
He stated that nations across the world should prioritize negotiation and diplomatic engagement instead of resorting to military force or weapons of mass destruction. According to him, dialogue remains the most effective way to address global conflicts while preserving stability.
Sibal also warned that the current international environment shows signs of weakening adherence to established global norms. In his view, the gradual erosion of the rules-based international order poses a challenge to long-term peace and security.

During his remarks, Sibal noted that the global system built around cooperation and shared rules appears to be under strain. He said that developments in recent years suggest a growing disregard for diplomatic mechanisms and multilateral frameworks designed to manage conflicts peacefully.
He added that such trends could have far-reaching consequences not only for the countries directly involved but also for the broader international community. According to him, safeguarding the global order requires renewed commitment from all nations to respect dialogue, diplomacy, and international law.
Several other public figures and representatives from diplomatic circles also visited the embassy to pay their respects. The gathering reflected the broader diplomatic response in India to the developments in West Asia.
Embassy Marks Mourning with Half-Mast Flag
As part of the mourning observance, the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi lowered its national flag to half-mast. The symbolic gesture marked respect for the late leader and signaled solidarity with Iran during a time of grief.
Officials at the embassy said the condolence meeting was intended to provide an opportunity for diplomats, political representatives, and members of the public to express their sympathy and stand in support of the Iranian people.
Condolence Book Opened in Hyderabad Consulate
Similar tributes were also held outside the national capital. At the Consulate General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Hyderabad, a condolence book was opened to allow visitors to pay their respects and record messages of support.
A significant number of people visited the consulate to sign the register and express solidarity with Iran. Many attendees offered prayers and conveyed their condolences to the Iranian nation.
Mohsin Moghaddmi, the Vice Consul of Iran, told reporters that the condolence book had been opened for Indian citizens who wished to honor the late leader and express their sympathy.
He said the initiative allowed people who admired Ayatollah Khamenei to share their messages and stand alongside the Iranian people during the mourning period.
Rising Tensions in West Asia
The condolence events took place against the backdrop of rapidly escalating tensions in West Asia. The crisis intensified after a joint military strike conducted by the United States and Israel targeted locations inside Iranian territory, resulting in the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei along with several senior figures.
