Epstein – State investigators in New Mexico have begun examining a remote ranch once owned by financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following renewed scrutiny linked to recently released federal documents. Authorities started the search on Monday at the property known as Zorro Ranch, amid concerns that the location may have been connected to alleged sexual abuse and sex trafficking involving young women.
Renewed scrutiny after release of federal documents
The latest action comes months after the United States Justice Department made public millions of documents connected to Epstein earlier this year. Within those records, the ranch in New Mexico is reportedly referenced thousands of times, prompting authorities to take a closer look at the property and its possible role in past allegations.
Officials say the search is being conducted with the knowledge and cooperation of the ranch’s current owners. According to the office of New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez, investigators are working carefully to review any information that could shed light on activities that may have taken place at the site during Epstein’s ownership.
State investigation reopened after earlier case closure
The attorney general’s office reopened its inquiry into the ranch last month. An earlier investigation by New Mexico authorities had been closed in 2019 after federal prosecutors in New York requested that the state step aside while federal proceedings were underway.
However, prosecutors now say the situation has changed. Newly available details from previously sealed FBI documents have prompted officials to reconsider whether additional examination of the ranch is necessary.
While Epstein was never formally charged with crimes in New Mexico, investigators previously interviewed several individuals who said they had visited the ranch. Those interviews were conducted during the state’s earlier inquiry before it was halted.
Allegations linked to visits at the ranch
Following Epstein’s death in 2019, new allegations connected to the ranch emerged in court filings and public statements. One woman, identified in legal documents as Jane Doe 15, claimed that Epstein assaulted her at the ranch when she was 15 years old.
Another accuser, Annie Farmer, stated that Ghislaine Maxwell — Epstein’s longtime associate who was later convicted in federal court — inappropriately touched her during a visit to the property when she was a teenager.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed whether the current search relates to specific claims, but officials say investigators will review any available evidence connected to past allegations.
History of the Zorro Ranch property
Epstein purchased the expansive Zorro Ranch property in 1993. Located in Stanley, New Mexico, the ranch sits about 30 miles south of Santa Fe and includes thousands of acres of land. After acquiring the property from former Democratic Governor Bruce King, Epstein constructed a large mansion on a hilltop and built a private runway on the grounds.
The ranch remained part of Epstein’s real estate holdings for decades and was frequently mentioned in connection with his travel and guest activities.
In 2023, Epstein’s estate sold the property. The sale proceeds were directed toward creditors as part of the settlement process involving victims and financial claims tied to Epstein’s assets. The ranch was purchased by the family of Don Huffines, a Texas political figure who recently won the Republican primary in a race for state comptroller.
Officials emphasize transparency and support for survivors
The New Mexico Department of Justice said investigators will continue their work while maintaining communication with the public. In a statement, the agency thanked the property’s current owners for cooperating with authorities during the search process.
Prosecutors also stated that their office remains committed to supporting survivors and pursuing any credible leads connected to Epstein’s activities.
At the same time, New Mexico lawmakers have formed a special commission tasked with examining historical events associated with the ranch. The panel is expected to review records and gather information to better understand what may have occurred there.
Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury of New Mexico said state officials are determined to pursue answers. In a message posted on social media, she noted that survivors connected to the case have waited years for accountability and emphasized the importance of continuing the search for the truth.
Epstein, who was convicted in 2008 for soliciting sex from underage girls, died in a Manhattan jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal charges that accused him of trafficking and abusing dozens of minors.
