Disaster – Deadly Rains Trigger Roof Collapses Across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Disaster – Heavy rainfall across Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has led to multiple structural collapses, resulting in significant loss of life and injuries over the past several days.

Rising Death Toll Across Multiple Districts
According to a report released by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on Monday, at least 17 people have died since March 25 due to rain-related incidents. Among the victims were 14 children, underscoring the vulnerability of families living in structurally weak housing. Additionally, 56 individuals sustained injuries in separate incidents across the province.
The district of Bannu recorded the highest number of casualties. Eight people lost their lives there, including seven children and one woman. Authorities also confirmed that 42 others were injured in the same district, making it the most severely affected area.
Incidents Reported in Abbottabad, Kohat and Beyond
Other districts also reported fatalities. In Abbottabad, five individuals, four of them children, died following the collapse of a roof. Kohat reported two deaths, while North Waziristan and Battagram each recorded one fatality. In Battagram, the victim was identified as a woman.
These incidents were primarily caused by the collapse of roofs and walls weakened by continuous rainfall. Officials noted that older and poorly constructed buildings were particularly susceptible to damage.
Details of Structural Collapses
The PDMA report highlighted that at least 11 houses were damaged during the recent rains, with Bannu accounting for five of these cases. Several tragic incidents occurred in this district alone. In the village of Dad Kachlot, a collapsing roof claimed the lives of three young children aged nine, six, and three.
Another major incident occurred in Kotka Ghulam Qadir, where the roof of a veranda at a community centre gave way. Two people died in that collapse, and 39 others were injured, many of whom were gathered at the time of the incident.
In Mama Kheil, two children were killed after a wall of their home collapsed. Similarly, in Shamdi Khel, a woman died when the roof of a room fell in during the storm.
Kohat’s Gumbat area also witnessed tragedy, where two children were killed after the roof of a room caved in under the weight of the rain.
In Abbottabad’s Havelian tehsil, five people lost their lives when the roof of a residential structure collapsed in Khaitar Hajiya Gali.
Ongoing Rescue and Relief Efforts
Emergency response teams have been actively engaged in rescue operations across affected districts. PDMA officials stated that they are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with local administrations to ensure timely assistance.
Authorities have directed district officials to accelerate the distribution of relief supplies, including food, shelter materials, and medical aid, to those impacted by the disaster.
In Lakki Marwat, two children were rescued after being trapped under debris when a roof collapsed in the Serai Noorung area. They were promptly shifted to a hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, in Nowshera, four individuals—two men and two women—were injured in another roof collapse. Rescue 1122 teams successfully retrieved them and ensured they received medical attention.
Concerns Over Infrastructure and Preparedness
The recent incidents have raised concerns about the structural safety of homes in vulnerable regions, especially during extreme weather conditions. Experts suggest that stronger building standards and improved disaster preparedness could help reduce such casualties in the future.
As rainfall continues in parts of the province, authorities remain on alert, urging residents to take precautions and avoid unsafe structures during adverse weather.
