Defense – Kim Jong-un Issues Stark Warning at Pyongyang Parade

Defense – North Korean leader Kim Jong-un delivered a forceful warning during a large-scale military parade in Pyongyang, stating that any attempt to violate his country’s sovereignty would be met with powerful retaliation.

Warning Delivered at Closing Ceremony

The remarks were made late Wednesday night at Kim Il Sung Square, where a military parade marked the conclusion of a major congress of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea. According to the state-run Korean Central News Agency, Kim addressed troops and senior officials, underscoring what he described as the country’s readiness to confront external threats.

“Our armed forces stand fully prepared for any situation,” Kim was quoted as saying. He added that the military would respond immediately and decisively if hostile forces attempted to undermine North Korea’s security or territorial integrity.

Kim described national defense as the state’s foremost responsibility, calling it an obligation that could not be entrusted to any outside party. He emphasized the need to safeguard the nation’s right to exist and pursue development in what he characterized as a complex global environment.

High-Level Attendance and Symbolism

Images released by state media showed Kim attending the event alongside his daughter, Kim Ju-ae, who has frequently appeared at high-profile public occasions and is widely viewed by analysts as a potential successor. His wife, Ri Sol-ju, and several senior party and military officials were also present in the viewing stand.

The parade featured coordinated aerial displays and approximately 50 formations of marching units. Among the participants were specialized engineering contingents and overseas operational units. State media indicated that some of these units have been deployed abroad, including in support roles linked to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.

Absence of Key Weapons Systems

Notably, photographs from the event did not show some of North Korea’s most advanced strategic weapons. The Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile, unveiled in October last year, was absent from the visuals distributed by the official news agency.

The omission has drawn attention from observers, as previous parades have prominently showcased missile systems and other high-profile military hardware. Analysts often interpret the display, or absence, of such systems as a signal of Pyongyang’s strategic messaging at a given time.

Party Congress Sets Five-Year Direction

The parade coincided with the closing stages of the ninth congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea, which began last Thursday. The gathering focused on outlining policy priorities for the next five years across diplomacy, defense, and economic planning.

During a policy review session, Kim addressed foreign relations, including ties with the United States and South Korea. According to reports carried by Yonhap News Agency, he said there would be no reason for continued hostility with Washington if it abandoned what he described as an adversarial policy toward Pyongyang.

At the same time, Kim dismissed recent overtures from Seoul aimed at reopening dialogue, characterizing them as insincere. Inter-Korean relations have remained strained in recent years, with limited formal communication and heightened tensions surrounding military exercises and weapons development.

Regional Implications

Kim’s latest statements come amid ongoing international concern over North Korea’s weapons programs and its evolving diplomatic posture. While the speech reiterated long-standing positions on sovereignty and deterrence, the tone signaled continued emphasis on military preparedness.

Observers note that large-scale parades in Pyongyang often serve multiple purposes: reinforcing domestic unity, projecting strength abroad, and communicating policy direction following major political meetings. This week’s event followed that pattern, blending symbolism with firm rhetoric on national defense.

As regional security dynamics continue to shift, North Korea’s messaging at such events is closely watched by neighboring countries and global powers alike.
