Crime – Australian police end months-long manhunt with fatal shooting
Crime – Australian authorities have reported that a man believed to be responsible for the fatal shooting of two police officers last year has been killed during a police operation in Victoria state. The development marks a significant turn in a case that had remained unresolved for several months.

Suspect Located After Months of Uncertainty
The individual, identified as 56-year-old Dezi Freeman, had been on the run since August 26, when he allegedly opened fire on officers who arrived at his residence near Porepunkah, a rural area northeast of Melbourne. The incident resulted in the deaths of two officers and left a third seriously injured.
According to Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush, there had been no confirmed sightings of Freeman since the day of the attack. Authorities had been pursuing multiple leads while also considering the possibility that the suspect may no longer have been alive.
Operation in Remote Region Leads to Confrontation
On Monday, police tracked a man believed to be Freeman to a remote forested location in northeastern Victoria. The area, known for its rugged terrain, had been a key focus of the search efforts due to its isolation and dense vegetation.
Special Operations Group officers, equipped for high-risk situations, were deployed to the scene. A standoff lasting approximately three hours followed, during which police attempted to negotiate a peaceful surrender.
Commissioner Bush stated that the suspect was inside a makeshift structure resembling a shipping container. Despite repeated efforts by officers to resolve the situation without violence, the man did not comply with instructions to surrender.
Fatal Outcome and Identification Process
The confrontation ended when police shot the suspect. Authorities have indicated that they “strongly believe” the deceased individual is Freeman, though formal identification procedures are still underway. These processes, including fingerprint analysis, are expected to take up to 48 hours.
Bush emphasized that the primary objective of the operation was to ensure public safety and, if possible, take the suspect into custody without harm. However, the circumstances led to a fatal outcome.
Questions Around Suspect’s Actions and Motives
Officials have not confirmed whether the suspect fired at police during the final encounter. However, it is believed that he may have been armed at the time, which contributed to the tactical response by officers.
Media reports have suggested that Freeman held anti-government views often associated with so-called sovereign citizen ideologies. He was also believed to possess strong survival skills, raising concerns among investigators that he could remain hidden in the wilderness for an extended period.
Extensive Search Effort Across Victoria
Following the initial attack, police launched a large-scale search operation across Victoria’s alpine region. The effort involved significant resources and continued for months, reflecting the seriousness of the case and the risk posed by the suspect.
In recent weeks, investigators had begun to explore the possibility that Freeman might have died by suicide, based on available evidence and lack of confirmed sightings.
“We had to consider every possibility,” Bush said, noting that some findings had pointed toward that scenario.
Ongoing Investigation Into Possible Assistance
Authorities are continuing to investigate whether the suspect received any assistance while evading capture. Police had previously announced a reward of 1 million Australian dollars for information leading to his arrest.
Bush declined to confirm whether a tip-off played a role in locating the suspect during the latest operation.
The case remains under active investigation as officials work to confirm the suspect’s identity and piece together the final events leading up to Monday’s encounter.
