China: Global anxiety is raised by exercises near Taiwan, and politicians call for a speedy reaction
China: On Tuesday, China carried out live-fire drills around Taiwan for the second day in a row. The drills sparked strong reactions from lawmakers in the US, Germany, and a global alliance of lawmakers, who warned of rising tensions and demanded immediate action to support Taipei, according to Focus Taiwan.

In response to the exercises, US Senator Roger Wicker said on X (previously Twitter) that Beijing’s activities demonstrated escalating preparations against Taiwan, emphasizing the Chinese Communist Party’s ability to exert pressure on Taipei and the People’s Liberation Army’s ability to impose a blockade.
According to Wicker, Washington has to act quickly to deploy critical defense capabilities by expediting production associated with recent foreign military sales to Taiwan and by implementing congressionally authorized financing from the Taiwan Security Cooperation Initiative and the Presidential Drawdown Authority. Focus Taiwan reports that the Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman made the comments.
In order to guarantee that President Lai Ching-te’s proposed special defense budget is passed, he also called on “our Taiwanese allies” to set aside political differences.
The NT 1.25 trillion (USD 39.96 billion) plan announced in late November to fund weapons purchase and cooperative research programs with the US from 2026 to 2033 was the target of the plea, which was aimed at Taiwan’s opposition Kuomintang and Taiwan People’s Party. The Republican senator wrote, “There is no time to waste.”
According to Focus Taiwan, Chinese officials stated the exercises were carried out in reaction to a recently authorized USD 11.1 billion weapons deal by the US under the Trump administration that includes drones, M109A7 howitzers, HIMARS rocket launchers, and anti-tank missiles.
Taiwan was also endorsed by other US politicians.
On X, Representative Mario Diaz-Balart said, “The United States stands with Taiwan and will continue to oppose coercion, aggression, and threats to regional stability.”
Senator Tom Cotton characterized Taiwan as a reliable US ally and commended the Trump administration’s strategy for preserving peace in the Taiwan Strait.
According to Focus Taiwan, Christian Democratic Union member Roderich Kiesewetter of the German Bundestag urged Berlin to denounce China’s actions, support Taiwan, and reevaluate support for Beijing’s one-China policy.
The exercises, according to the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC), a group of parliamentarians from democratic nations, represented a shift away from restraint and a purposeful increase in coercive coercion by the PLA.
The organization said that China’s increasing dependence on military intimidation raises the possibility of mistake, endangering Indo-Pacific and global wealth as well as Taiwan Strait stability.
In order to increase the cost of aggression, improve readiness, and guarantee coordinated responses to escalation, IPAC advised nations to go beyond declarations and embrace a unified deterrent architecture.
The Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO), the Philippine official office in Taiwan, also voiced concerns.
Developments that increase the likelihood of tension, error, or conflict in the Taiwan Strait are “deeply worrying,” according to a statement from MECO that Focus Taiwan cited. This is especially true given the possible effects they may have on regional stability, trade routes, and the safety of Filipinos residing and working in Taiwan. We implore everyone to use as much moderation as possible, refrain from taking escalating measures, and maintain open lines of communication,” the statement said.
