What’s happening in Bangladesh
The Daily Star reports that on Wednesday afternoon, police halted a group of demonstrators moving in the direction of the Indian High Commission in the Gulshan neighborhood of Dhaka. The demonstrators were calling for the return of Sheikh Hasina, the ousted prime minister, as well as those who had left during and after the July insurrection last year.
Around 3:15 p.m. today, several hundred demonstrators carrying the “July Oikya” flag gathered near Rampura Bridge and started to march. According to the report, police put up barriers to block the road as the procession headed towards Uttar Badda, which stopped the protesters from continuing.
Protesters succeeded in breaking through the first barrier in spite of the obstacle, but they were halted once again by a more robust police roadblock farther on. The Daily Star cited on-the-ground reports that the protesters, unable to continue, finally sat on the road, shouted slogans, and used loudspeakers to address the crowd.
Protesters were heard yelling chants like “Delhi na, Dhaka; Dhaka, Dhaka” earlier in the march. To keep the peace and stop the situation from becoming worse, a lot of law enforcement officers were stationed along the procession route, according to The Daily Star. The demonstration takes place in the midst of New Delhi’s growing worries over Bangladesh’s security situation.
