Governance – Women Reservation Bill Sparks Political Debate Ahead of Bengal Polls

Governance – Actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut has welcomed the proposed Women Reservation Bill, describing it as a significant move toward strengthening women’s role in Indian politics. Speaking on the development, she said the initiative reflects a long-standing vision to provide women with fair representation and a stronger voice in governance.

Push for Greater Political Representation

Ranaut highlighted that women continue to face structural barriers in entering politics, often remaining underrepresented despite forming a substantial portion of the population. Referring to her home state of Himachal Pradesh, she pointed out the stark gender imbalance in legislative representation, noting that only one woman currently serves as an MLA in the 68-member assembly.

According to her, such disparities underline the importance of institutional support. The proposed reservation of 33 percent seats for women is expected to address these gaps and create a more inclusive political framework. She added that ensuring women’s participation at decision-making levels could gradually shift long-standing inequalities.

Confidence and Safety Linked to Representation

Emphasizing broader social implications, Ranaut said the move could boost confidence among women across the country. She noted that safety concerns continue to affect women’s freedom, whether it involves traveling alone, participating in public events, or engaging in professional activities.

She argued that empowering women through political representation would not only help them advocate for themselves but also strengthen systems that protect others. According to her, when women occupy leadership positions at local and national levels, they are better positioned to address issues affecting communities directly.

Legislative Developments Around the Bill

The Women Reservation Bill, formally known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, was passed in 2023. The government is now considering further legislative steps to streamline its implementation. One key proposal involves separating women’s reservation from the delimitation process, which determines the boundaries of constituencies.

Officials have indicated that a separate Delimitation Bill may be introduced to support this transition. Both measures would require constitutional amendments before coming into effect. With these changes, the size of the Lok Sabha could expand significantly, potentially exceeding 800 seats in the future.

Concerns Over Women’s Safety in West Bengal

Turning to West Bengal, Ranaut raised concerns about incidents of violence against women in the state, particularly ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. She referred to recent cases that have drawn national attention, including the tragic death of a trainee doctor in Kolkata in 2024, which led to widespread protests.

She suggested that such incidents have intensified public debate around governance and law enforcement. The issue has also become a political flashpoint, with opposition parties criticizing the state administration’s handling of women’s safety.

Political Tensions Ahead of State Elections

The upcoming West Bengal assembly elections are expected to witness a closely fought contest. Voting is scheduled to take place in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with results to be announced on May 4. Multiple parties, including the ruling Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, are actively campaigning to secure voter support.

In the previous election held in 2021, the Trinamool Congress secured a decisive victory with 213 seats, while the BJP emerged as the main opposition with 77 seats. Other parties, including Congress and the Left Front, failed to win any seats.

Call for Stronger Law Enforcement

Ranaut also stressed the importance of strict action against those involved in crimes against women. She expressed confidence that law enforcement agencies would take firm steps to ensure justice and deterrence. Referring to recent statements by central leadership, she said that authorities remain committed to using legal provisions to address such crimes effectively.

She concluded by stating that initiatives like the Women Reservation Bill, combined with stronger enforcement mechanisms, could play a crucial role in improving both representation and safety for women across the country.
