TradeDeal – Piyush Goyal Dismisses Reports of Delay in India-US Trade Pact

TradeDeal – Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday firmly rejected reports claiming that India intends to delay a trade agreement with the United States for several months. Addressing participants at the NXT Summit 2026 in New Delhi, the minister described the circulating claims as inaccurate and without any factual basis, reiterating that engagement between the two countries on trade matters continues without interruption.

Minister Rejects Speculation on Trade Negotiations

Speaking at the summit, Goyal stated that certain reports that emerged earlier in the day suggesting a pause in negotiations should not be taken seriously. According to him, such claims lack any credible foundation. He emphasized that India maintains a strong and constructive trade relationship with the United States and continues to work toward a balanced agreement beneficial for both sides.

The minister stressed that ongoing discussions are aimed at strengthening economic cooperation while protecting India’s domestic interests. He added that the government remains committed to ensuring that any final arrangement reflects mutual advantages rather than one-sided concessions.

Safeguards for Sensitive Domestic Sectors

Goyal also highlighted that India has taken a cautious approach in negotiations to safeguard sectors that are considered sensitive for the country’s economy. He noted that agriculture remains a key area where the government has ensured strict protection.

According to the minister, provisions in the agreement prevent the entry of certain products that could affect local producers. These include genetically modified agricultural goods as well as items such as rice, corn, maize, soybean, dairy products, and poultry. By maintaining these safeguards, the government believes it has successfully defended the interests of Indian farmers and agricultural stakeholders.

He described the proposed arrangement as balanced and constructive, pointing out that a well-designed trade agreement should generate benefits for both participating economies rather than creating disadvantages for either side.

Technology Cooperation Seen as Long-Term Advantage

Beyond immediate trade gains, Goyal pointed to potential long-term benefits that could emerge from stronger economic cooperation with the United States. One of the key advantages, he said, is improved access to advanced technologies.

The minister explained that such collaboration could support India’s ambition to expand its digital infrastructure and strengthen its role in global technology networks. He suggested that partnerships with American companies and investors may accelerate the development of data centres and digital ecosystems in India.

According to Goyal, technological collaboration could also lead to increased investment following the momentum created by recent global discussions on artificial intelligence and digital innovation.

Officials Confirm Continued Bilateral Engagement

Officials from the Commerce Ministry also reiterated that dialogue between India and the United States remains active and constructive. They clarified that there is no pause or slowdown in bilateral engagement related to the trade agreement.

The two countries had recently announced a framework outlining an interim arrangement designed to advance reciprocal and mutually beneficial trade. This framework is intended to serve as an initial step toward a broader bilateral trade agreement.

The announcement reinforced both nations’ commitment to expanding market access and strengthening supply chains. Officials from both sides have indicated that negotiations will continue to build on this framework and move toward a comprehensive economic partnership.

Interim Framework Linked to Broader Trade Agreement

The interim arrangement forms part of a wider negotiation process that began after discussions between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2025. Those talks initiated formal negotiations aimed at creating a long-term bilateral trade agreement between the two countries.

According to a joint statement issued earlier, the interim deal is expected to mark an important milestone in the economic partnership between India and the United States. The agreement aims to promote balanced trade, improve market access, and create more resilient supply chains across sectors.

Both governments have indicated that future negotiations will continue to focus on concrete outcomes that support economic growth and stability for their respective markets.

US Investigates Trade Practices of Major Partners

In a separate development, the administration of President Donald Trump has launched fresh investigations into alleged unfair trade practices by several major trading partners. The list reportedly includes India, China, and Bangladesh, among others.

The move follows a recent ruling by the US Supreme Court that declared earlier tariff measures unlawful. By initiating these investigations, the administration is expected to review trade practices and consider new tariff measures if necessary.

Analysts believe these developments could influence ongoing global trade discussions, including negotiations involving India and the United States. However, officials from both countries have maintained that dialogue on their bilateral agreement remains constructive and forward-looking.
